Notizen: Abstract— The development of anisotropic material properties due to torsional cyclic plastic straining of tubes with sustained axial loads was examined for a type 316 stainless steel at room temperature and at 500°C. The effect of the cyclic strains and the cumulative ratchetting strains on the axial tensile properties was determined and the results show a significant increase in the tensile strength at both 20°C and 500°C, with more pronounced hardening at the higher temperature. The cyclic shear stress-strain response of the material is shown to be extremely temperature dependent and the hardening ratio is much greater at 500°C, which is consistent with the dynamic strain ageing observed previously for this material. The ratchetting strains are controlled by the cyclic shear strain hardening, by the axial hardening resulting from the cyclic shear and the cumulative axial strains, and by the ratio of the secondary shear stress to the primary axial stress.

Notizen: Abstract— The plastic deformation of thin-walled cylinders has been experimentally examined for the loading conditions of ±1% axial strain with hoop stresses of approximately 0, 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of the initial uniaxial yield stress. Two materials similar to those used in the pipework of PWR nuclear plant in the U.K. have been tested, namely 304S11 stainless steel and En6 low-carbon steel. The results of the tests were to be compared with the allowable stresses and deformations specified in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III. The code specifies that a prescribed combination of primary stresses must not exceed 1.5Sm, where Sm is a stress value defined for each material. The results indicate that the limit of 1.5Sm is excessively low for both materials and that in particular, the stainless steel could tolerate 5Sm. Although the En6 steel is more prone to ratchetting than the stainless steel, the results suggest that it too could tolerate a higher primary stress than the code allows. Both materials are shown to satisfy the proposed ASME ratchet strain limit of 5% hoop strain after 10 cycles of ±1% axial strain range, for any value of internal pressure.

Notizen: Abstract— The use of kinematic hardening models are examined for tubes subjected to (a) cyclic plastic torsion with a sustained axial stress and (b) cyclic plastic tension-compression with a sustained hoop stress. It is shown that the kinematic model predicts a limit to the plastic strain accumulation resulting from the sustained loads. Experimental results show that the strain accumulation is not limited and that the mode of deformation within a cycle of plastic strain cannot be predicted using a kinematic hardening model. The development of the yield surface under cyclic loading is examined. The results indicate that contraction and expansion of the yield surface along the stress axes can occur and it is shown that the direction of the sustained stresses, relative to the direction of the cyclic stresses is an important factor in the development of any cumulative plastic strains.

Notizen: Abstract— An anisotropic form of the Von Mises yield criteria is presented which includes linear terms and therefore enables Bauschinger effects to be considered when constructing yield or loading surfaces. The coefficients representing the state of anisotropy are expressed in terms of the uni-axial and shear yield stress of the material. It is suggested that this form of the yield or loading surface can be used to determine the plastic strains for a range of multi-axial and cyclic plasticity problems and results are presented for the particular case of a tube subjected to cyclic plastic torsion with an axial stress.

Notizen: Summary A study was conducted to evaluate differences in rangeland grasshopper communities over environmental gradients in Gallatin Valley, Montana, USA. The concept of habitat type (Daubenmire 1966) was used as a basis for discriminating between groupings of patches based on vegetation. A total of 39 patches were selected that represented five recognized grassland habitat types (Mueggler and Stewart 1980), as well as two disturbed types (replanting within a known habitat type). Repeated sampling in 1988 of both the insect and plant communities yielded a total of 40 grasshopper (19 664 individuals) and 97 plant species. Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) indicated that patch classifications based on presence and percent cover of plants were appropriate and showed good between-group (habitat type) separation for patches along gradients of precipitation/elevation and plant community complexity. Results from undisturbed habitats showed that plant and grasshopper species composition changed over observed environmental gradients and suggested that habitat type influenced not only species presence, but also relative abundance. Discussion is presented that relates results with patch-use and core and satellite species paradigms.
