    Notes: Abstract Assemblages of Early Pliocene Mysticeti (Cetacea) from the Sendai-Iwate and Choshi areas in eastern Japan were examined. The early Early Pliocene Tatsunokuchi and Yushima formations of the Sendai-Iwate area have yielded many cetotheres assigned to Herpetocetus (Cetotheriidae) and some extinct rorquals assigned to Burtinopsis (Balaenopteridae) and other genera. The late Early Pliocene strata of the Na-arai Formation of the Choshi area has yielded more than 300 mysticete ear bones which fall into seven morphotypes. Assemblages from the two areas differ greatly in taxonomic composition. Archaic mysticetes are dominant in the Sendai-Iwate area, while modern mysticetes are dominant and diverse in the Choshi area. Based on the results of this study we conclude that the diversity of the Early Pliocene mysticetes in the western North Pacific is comparable to that of the Recent.

    Notes: Abstract Fossil cetacea of Japan are abundant and diverse. Despite several summary articles, all the known taxa have not previously been compiled in one place. Here we present a list of the published fossil cetacean records from the Japanese archipelago. The record extends from Middle or Late Oligocene to the Holocene, and includes representatives of both the suborders Odontoceti and Mysticeti. No Eocene Cetacea or Archaeoceti are recorded from Japan. As is typical of the eastern North Pacific and the South Pacific, the Oligocene and Early Miocene assemblages are comprised of archaic and usually extinct families, and the younger assemblages are represented by modern groups comprised of extant genera and families.

    Notes: Abstract Upon studying the well preserved skulls referred to Paleoparadoxia tabatai from Japan, the short and low skull of the Yanagawa specimen requires an explanation. Six cranial and dental characters lead us to suggest that the Yanagawa individual is a female while the Izumi, Ohnohara, and Itsukaichi skulls are male. The important characters in the Yanagawa skull are its shortness and shallow depth, less pronounced sagittal and nuchal crests, smaller zygoma, and the small dentition with especially poorly erupted canines, most of which are indicative of weak masticatory musculature.

    Notes: Abstract Two fossil teeth of the Pleistocene macaque of Japan are stated to be those ofMacaca cf.fuscata. One of them is a lower canine tooth found in the Shiriya mine in northern Japan. It has been thought that the fossil assemblage of the Shiriya mine is of the late Pleistocene. The canine concerned is not distinguishable from the lower right one of the living female Japanese monkey. The other is a lower molar taken from the Ando quarry in western Japan. The fossil assemblage from the Ando quarry or from sites neighbouring the quarry indicates that the age of the molar can be traced back to the middle Pleistocene. The molar concerned has a somewhat buccolingually depressed crown as compared with that of the living Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata).

    Notes: The mechanism of fragmentation in the chemical ionization mass spectra of thermally demethylated choline esters has been investigated using various deuterated analogs of acetylcholine as models. The reagent gases employed included CH4, C2H4, NH3 and N2H3. Prominent [MH]+ or [M2H]+ ions were observed respectively in all cases. A 1,3-hydrogen rearrangement in the acetyl portion followed by loss of ketene was seen in CH4 chemical ionization spectra, as well as cleavage of the CH2—N bond after protonation on the nitrogen. Alpha cleavage produced ions analogous to the m / z 58 ion which is found as the base peak in the electron impact spectra of demethylated choline esters. A major difference between the fragmentation after electron impact and chemical ionization was seen in the m/z 72 region. The McLafferty rearrangement observed after electron impact was not found after chemical ionization. Rather, a mechanism involving protonation of the carboxyl group followed by simple cleavage of the CH2—O bond was consistent with the present results for the variously labelled analogs and reagent gases. Finally, in the chemical ionization mass spectra of demethylated acetylcholine little retention of the H+ or 2H+ was found in the observed fragment ions.
