Notes: Abstract Unheated-normal rabbit and rat sera stimulate bone resorption in tissue culture. The magnitude of this effect is enhanced when the sera were incubated with an antigen-antibody precipitate. Sera heated prior to treatment with antigen-antibody precipitate had no effect on bone resorption. The stimulation of bone resorption by sera was associated with osteoclast formation. Our results are consistent with a heat labile factor in some sera which stimulates bone resorption. Whether this factor is a component of complement or not is not answered by our studies.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this investigation was to determine the relationship between loss of radiographic crestal bone height and probing attachment loss. As part of this aim, we are introducing a new method for determination of a threshold for significant probing attachment loss which takes into account the error contributed by alteration in tissue tone. 57 adults with established periodontitis were selected. Radiographs were taken using the Rinn alignment system. Crestal change was determined from bone height measurements on digitized images of pairs of radiographs using the “side-by-side” technique of analysis developed recently by us. Probing attachment loss was measured using the Florida electronic probe system. Radiographic and probing measurements were made at baseline and after 1 year. No treatment was given during this period. A direct and significant relationship was observed between radiographic bone loss and probing attachment loss on a site basis (p= 0.0001, r2= 0.018) and between subject means (p= 0.0014, r2= 0.16). Radiographic and probing attachment change at all categories of sites, dichotomously classified as to not changing or loosing indicated 13% of sites were loosing by measurement of radiographic change and 9.6% were Loosing by measurement of attachment change. Concordance in radiographic and attachment level change was found in 82% of sites examined. The relative diagnostic import of change in probing attachment or change in radiographic bone height requires treatment outcome studies based on use of diagnostic information of the 2 measuring techniques used singly and in combination.

Notes: Abstract Studies utilizing serial standardized periapical radiographs for measurements of alveolar bone height and for digital subtraction and changes in clinical probing attachment level have suggested that adult periodontitis may exhibit periods of exacerbation and remission at specific sites. The use of such serial examinations for the determination of disease activity must be interpreted with caution since the different methods for the assessment of disease activity have different levels of sensitivity and specificity and because such sequential methods integrate disease activity and do not provide an instantaneous measure of activity. An ideal test for disease activity would approach an instantaneous measure of disease activity and would not integrate activity over time.

Notes: Abstract. No practical methods are presently available for measurement of alveolar bone activity at one instant of time. However, roentgenological methods making measurements at 2 different times can be used to assess alveolar bone activity. The most sensitive, specific and accurate method for this purpose presently in use is 125I absorptiometry. This method has the further advantage of giving the patient minimal radiation exposure. New methodology is under development which obviates the need for fixed geometry and could provide a 3-dimensional image of alveolar bone.
