    Notes: Examination of a large, oedematous placenta of a still-born infant showed an extensive infiltration of chorionic villi by malignant cells; the nature of these was not apparent by light microscopy. Ultrastructural examination of these cells showed the presence of cytoplasmic granules whose size and appearance were consistent with those characteristically present in neuroblastomas. Whereas no necropsy was carried out on the still-born infant, it may be assumed, in keeping with the available data, that the placental metastases were derived from a congenital neuroblastoma. Infiltration of the villous stroma by metastatic neuroblastoma observed in the present case was not reported previously as in all other known instances the metastatic neuroblastomatous cells were confined to the lumina of the chorionic vessels.

    Notes: A pilot study was carried out to test whether normal human aorta and aortic atherosclerotic lesions obtained at post-mortem examination were suitable for the demonstration of proteoglycans (PGs) by ruthenium red (RR) staining, and whether by this method qualitative and quantitative differences of PGs might be detectable in various types of lesions and between lesions and the normal aortic intima. The results indicate that the PGs of the above tissues obtained at post mortem were clearly visualized by electron microscopy using the RR-indicator and were thus suitable for quantitative and qualitative evaluation. Of the RR-positive granules only those 20 nm and larger were assessed. RR-granules measuring 20–50 nm were present in normal intima and media, in increased concentration in the innermost part of the mixed fatty-gelatinous lesion, and in a decreased concentration in the fibrous cap of an atherosclerotic plaque. The same RR-granules were observed in a fatty streak and in addition 50–100 nm granules were present in this type of lesion; the overall RR-granule-concentration was reduced here. Granules of both sizes were interconnected by filamentous network. The differential presence of the large (and hitherto unreported) as well as the smaller granules in the various lesions is briefly discussed in the light of the present-day knowledge of tissue-PGs, and the importance of an examination in situ of the compound PGs-complexes in their native form, is emphasized.

    Notes: Summary Fetal stem arteries of the 3rd order of 50 normal placentas obtained at term of unevenful pregnancies were examined by transmission electron microscopy with the aim at providing a base-line information for the assessment of similar arteries in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The results showed that the endothelial cells often protruded with a considerable portion of their cellular body into the lumen, and that the intercellular junctions between the neighbouring cells were confined largely to their short basal segments. Numerous myoepithelial junctions were formed between the processes of the endothelial cells and those extending from the smooth muscle cells (SMC) of the adjacent medial layer. At times the “participating” processes of the SMC were entirely enclosed within the endothelial body. Collagen fibrils increased in number between the SMC and the interstitium broadened progressively from the inner to the outer arterial layers. Small cellular processes devoided of a basement membrane and of most cytoplasmic organelles were numerous in the interstitium; these were traced to the main bodies of the medial SMC. It is postulated that the “naked” SMC-processes are susceptible to injury of a nature much more subtle than that affecting the main body of the SMC, since these processes were often swollen and appeared edematous in an otherwise innocuous mural environment.

    Notes: Summary Cardiac tissues obtained at post mortem examination of eight patients with the Hurler syndrome, who ranged in age from 5 to 23 years, were examined by histochemical methods and electron microscopy. Extensive myocardiocytic vacuolization and increased interstitial fibrous tissue were noted by light microscopy in all hearts. The cytoplasmic (perinuclear) vacuoles contained Luxol-fast-blue-positive substance. At the ultrastructural level, abnormal cytoplasmic organelles were present within the myocardiocytes in all patients. These organelles were of three types: zebra bodies (ZB), membranous cytoplasmic bodies (MCB) and granulomembranous bodies (GMB). As ZB and MCB are believed to represent the morphological counterpart of accumulated gangliosides, these substances rather than glycosaminoglycans appear to be stored within myocardiocytes of patients with the Hurler syndrome. The accumulation of gangliosides and the consequent damage to the myocardial substratum probably contributes to the clinically evident cardiac disease, so often observed in the patients with this disorder.

    Notes: Summary “Primary” cilia were present in the endothelial cells of human aortic fatty dots and streaks but not in those of normal intima. They had the features of cilia of the “9+0” axonemal configuration observed in many other cells. A lateral foot process and transitional fibers “anchored” the ciliary basal body in the cytoplasm, but rootlets were not identified in material examined. Ladder-like configurations interconnected the two centrioles (=diplosome) of control endothelium. The “primary” cilia of endothelium differed from those of the rudimentary type observed in smooth muscle cells in similar lesions of man, but shared many features with cilia of those present in experimental atherosclerosis in rabbit. Cilia were rarely described in vascular endothelium. It is believed that, to date, they were not reported to occur in normal or pathological arteries in man. It is being stressed that whereas the significance of these unusual organelles remains uncertain, their widespread occurrence may indicate that their role is more important than was believed previously, and they should cease being a curiosity only.

    Notes: The variation in the origin of the (posterior) intercostal arteries was examined in 79 aortae of children who ranged in age from 1 day to 15 years and died of various causes. The distribution, size and number of the origins of the (usually present: 9) pairs of these arteries varied widely. The most commonly observed patterns were as follows: variation in distance between arteries of a given pair; variation in spacing between adjacent pairs; presence of a supernumerary single artery or of a pair; absence of one or both arteries of a given pair; unequal size of the orifices of a pair; complete division of a single artery into two branches beyond its origin; and an incomplete division of a single artery by a partial septum.Of interest appears to be the absence of one (in 59 instances) or both (in 17 instances) arteries of the same pair; the tenth intercostals were most commonly so affected. It would require a prospectively designed study to ascertain whether the absence of any of the intercostal arteries may have a clinical effect in man. Since these arteries supply directly or indirectly not only the intercostal and pectoral muscles, serratus anterior and the muscles of the back, but also the spinal cord, and in addition, provide cutaneous and a few mammary branches, functional correlations in the absence of given arteries may prove to havepractical implications.
