    Notes: Abstract Development of cardiac musculature in the rat cranial vena cava (common cardinal vein or duct of Cuvier) was examined by immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. Undifferentiated cardiac myocytes were detected in the cranial vena cava wall of rat embryos after 12.5 days post-coitum (dpc). The tunica media of the cranial vena cava was composed of cardiac myocytes after formation of the endothelium. Therefore, the cranial vena cava may be not only a part of the venous system but also of the heart. Myocytes in the cranial vena cava contained developing myofibrils, mitochondria and intercalated discs similar to those found in the myocytes in the heart. Striated myofibrils began to differentiate as soon as myocytes appeared in the vena cava wall, and myocytes with differentiating myofibrils occur in the wall as the first component of the tunica media at 12.5 dpc. We concluded that the cardiac musculature in the vena cava is not a secondary extension into the tunica media after birth only in the rat, but a basic structure formed in all mammals during early embryonic development.

    Notes: This study was performed to determine if, as expected, the enlarged eye of the Baikal seal (Phoca sibirica) has an influence on the form and function of the skull and facial muscles. Macroscopic observation of these muscles demonstrated that the M. orbicularis oculi expands around the palpebral fissure and that some facial muscles attach and insert in the M. orbicularis oculi, possibly supporting M. orbicularis oculi function. We suggest that these muscles move the eye and palpebral area and constitute a morphological and synergistic facial muscle complex system. Further, the development of the M. rectus lateralis around the sclera of the eye indicates that this muscle is also involved in eye movement.

    Notes: Abstract Rod-shaped BaTiO3 powder particles have been prepared from rod-shaped TiO2 ·nH2O and BaCO3 in molten chloride. The morphology of BaTiO3 particles was studied referring to the effects of the chemical species of the starting titanium compound, amount of chloride, particle size of the titanium compound and reaction conditions, and the preparation condition of rod-shaped BaTiO3 has been determined: i.e., large TiO2 ·nH2O particles were heated at 700°C in molten salt with an equal amount of BaTiO3. This condition was effective in suppressing the formation of BaTiO3 by a solution-precipitation process as well as the deformation of either TiO2 ·nH2O or BaTiO3, which are responsible for the formation of equiaxed BaTiO3 particles. The obtained rod-shaped BaTiO3 particles had a cubic symmetry. Electron diffraction analysis showed that the following topotactic relation is retained; 〈0 1 0〉potassium tetratitanate ∥ 〈0 1 0〉hydrated titania ∥ 〈1 0 0〉anatase ∥ 〈1 0 0〉barium titanate

    Notes: Abstract Lead titanate gels have been prepared by adding an aqueous nitric acid solution to a Pb-Ti complex alkoxide. A systematic study was made to examine the effects of process parameters such as amounts of water and acid alkoxide molarity on the gelation time as well as on the structure of the gels obtained. The gel structure was characterized by the elastic modulus which was determined via sound wave propagation through the gels. It was found that an increase in both the amount of water and alkoxide molarity caused rapid gelation. Acid additions not only suppressed gelation but also reduced the elastic moduli of the resultant gels. Gels having a low elastic modulus were found to be desirable for the suppression of cracking during ageing and drying. Addition of an excessive amount of acid, however, prevented the formation of a large scale polymer-network and resulted in a powder-like gel. The porosity and dielectric constant of dried gels are also reported.

    Notes: Abstract Patients with minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) occasionally show frequent relapses with proteinuria after cessation of steroid treatment, even though no significant pathological abnormalities are found in the glomeruli, compared with those in nonrelapsed and good-prognosis cases of MCNS. To resolve this contradiction, we immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally examined a biopsied renal tissue of a patient who showed glomerular features of MCNS and frequent clinical relapses. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated the overexpression of α-smooth muscle actin (ASMA) and vimentin in glomerular mesangial cells despite no mesangial cell proliferation, compared with nine nonrelapsed cases of MCNS. These facts may be an important clue to the investigation of the pathogenesis of steroid-dependent MCNS with frequent relapses. Furthermore, the immunohistochemical examination of ASMA and vimentin may be useful to detect mesangial myofibroblastic transformation that is not demonstrated in conventional light microscopy and immunofluorescence study.

    Notes: Abstract To investigate the early in vivo response of hepatic stellate cells in biliary fibrosis, we examined rat livers during the first 7 days after bile duct ligation using light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and immunoelectron microscopy. At day 1 after bile duct ligation, α-smooth muscle actin-positive fibroblasts appeared and then increased in number around the proliferating bile ductules. With time, the destruction of the external limiting plate became accentuated because of the invasion of the proliferating bile ductules and periductural fibrosis. At day 7, stromal cells containing fat droplets appeared in the fibrous tissue adjacent to the periportal parenchyma; these are termed denuded hepatic stellate cells. In the fibrous tissue disconnected from the liver parenchyma, the denuded hepatic stellate cells were replaced by myofibroblast-like cells. Meanwhile, the expression of transforming growth factor-β1 on biliary epithelial cells increased. These results indicate the dual origin of myofibroblasts in experimental biliary fibrosis, the periductural and periductal fibroblasts in the initial stage, and the denuded hepatic stellate cells in the subsequent stage. These two types of stromal cells may undergo myofibroblastic transformation by the transforming growth factor-β1 secreted by the proliferating biliary epithelial cells.

    Notes: Abstract Adenoid basal carcinoma of the uterine cervix is a rare tumor with a favorable prognosis. A case of adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) of the uterine cervix was studied using light and electron microscopy. The patient was a 74-year-old Japanese woman who had undergone hysterectomy due to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 3. Incidentally, ABC was found in the resected uterus. The tumor cells made small nests and infiltrated the cervical portion of the uterus. In the nests, glands, cribriform patterns with glandlike structures, and squamous differentiation were seen. Immunohistochemically, the glandlike structures were positive for laminin and type IV collagen. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cells had irregular nuclei, scanty cytoplasm, and cribriform patterns in which glandlike structures were covered with basal lamina. No myoepithelial differentiation of the tumor cells was seen. These findings suggest a similarity between adenoid basal carcinomas and adenoid cystic carcinomas. Furthermore, both tumors are considered to originate in the reserve cells of the uterine cervix. Because their outcomes are different, they should be distinguished from each other.

    Notes: Abstract We studied the effects of aging on energy metabolism and muscular function in aged rat hindlimb muscles. Energy metabolism was evaluated by phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy and muscular function by a strain gauge. Five young (25 weeks old) Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and old (92 weeks old) male WKY rats were used. Initial muscular tension in the old rats was about 55% of that in the young rats [383.4±40.0 (SE) dynes vs 211.1±12.5 (SE) dynes;P〈0.05]. During the latter part of the stimulation period the tension decreased to similar levels in the two groups. During the first 2 min of stimulation, the phosphocreatine (PCr)/{inorganic phosphate (Pi) + sugar phosphate (SP)} ratio and the intracellular pH in both young and old rats declined to their minimum values. From 12 to 16 min of stimulation, the PCr/(Pi+SP) ratio and intracellular pH in young rats were significantly higher than the values in old rats (P〈0.05). During and after stimulation, the rate of recovery of the PCr/(Pi+SP) ratio and intracellular pH in the young rats was greater than that in the old rats. These results showed that aging caused low initial tension, low energy level, and low intracellular pH in skeletal muscle during and after stimulation, with a slowing in the recovery of energy levels and the intracellular pH.

    Notes: Abstract Acicular NiZn-ferrite powder particles have been prepared from goethite-derived acicular Fe2O3 and spherical constituent oxides in the presence of molten chloride or sulphate. The morphology of NiZn-ferrite particles has been studied with reference to the effect of chemical species of molten salts, ferrite composition and particle size of constituent divalent oxides. Hence the best preparation conditions for acicular NiZn-ferrite powder with homogeneous composition have been determined; a mixture of acicular Fe2O3 and submicron constituent oxides is heated at 900° C in an amount of potassium chloride with four times the weight of ferrite. Electron diffraction analysis shows that the particle axes of acicular Fe2O3 and NiZn-ferrite are parallel to [¯1 1 0 0]haematite and [¯1 0 1]ferrite and that a topotactic relation is retained.
