    Notes: The transport of corrosive liquids containing solids, in conventional energy and process technology as, for example, in oil and gas production, places high demands on the selection of materials for plant construction. A discussion on the chemo-mechanical load demonstrates the significance of hydrodynamics in selecting the test method. Choosing a pipe with an abrupt expansion of cross-section as a flow model yields a new method of simulating operation conditions. By subjecting ferrous materials used for hydraulic machinery to representative media from three important industries, a broad spectrum of results can be obtained. Classification of the results leads to four basic types of mass loss behaviour in materials as functions of flow rate. These findings yield guidelines for the selection of materials and the dimensioning of flow equipment.

    Description / Table of Contents: Bevor Korrosionsuntersuchungen durchgeführt werden können, müssen Überlegungen über den zu wählenden Größenmaßstab angestellt werden. Wie in der Verfahrens- und Chemischen Reaktionstechnik ergibt sich ein Scale-up- und ein Scale-down-Problem, wenn Betriebsbedingungen im Laboratoriumsmaßstab simuliert werden sollen. Als Folge der Vielfältigkeit von Korrosionsphänomenen, Korrosionsarten und Mechanismen ist die Zahl der möglichen Untersuchungsmethoden groß, und das jeweilige Verfahren muß dem praktischen Problem sorgfältig angepaßt werden. Die Prinzipien der Simulation von Praxisbedingungen werden an einer Reihe von Beispielen erläutert.
    Notes: Before corrosion tests are carried out, one must realise the scale to be selected. As in chemical engineering the problem of “scaling down” and “scaling up” arises if plant conditions are to be simulated on a laboratory scale. As a consequence of the multiplicity of corrosion phenomena, parameters and mechanisms the number of corrosion testing methods is large and test procedures have carefully to be adjusted to the particular practical problem. Simulation principles are illustrated by a number of examples.

    Notes: New Technologies - New Corrosion Problems. Adequate resistance of materials to corrosion is equally important for classical and for new technologies. This article considers the economic consequences of corrosion damage and, in addition to the longknown GNP orientation, presents a new approach to the estimation of the costs of corrosion and corrosion protection via maintenance and especially corrosionrelated maintenance. The significance of “high-tech”, “medium-tech” and “low-tech” material and corrosion problems is assessed. Selected examples taken from new technologies in the areas of power engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, and biotechnology demonstrate the great significance of the problems. It is concluded that corrosion research and corrosion prevention technology will never come to an end but will constantly face new problems. Two technologies are of particular interest since they focus attention on new methods of investigation: microelectronics and final disposal of radioactive wastes. The article closes by considering the importance of the transfer of experience and technology. Since the manufacturs and operators of machines and plant do not generally have access to the very latest knowledge, they should be kept informed through advisory services, experimental studies, databases, and further education.

    Notes: Elektrochemische Festbett- und Wirbelbett-Zellen eignen sich in hervorragender Weise für eine Anwendung bekannter verfahrens- und reaktionstechnischer Prinzipien aus dem Gebiet der technischen Chemie. Die Makrokinetik dieser Elektrodensysteme weist einige Besonderheiten auf, die sich auf die Vergrößerung der spezifischen Elektroden-Oberflächen, die Intensivierung des Stofftransports und die Potentialverteilung in der Elektrode zurückführen lassen. Unter Beachtung gewisser Restriktionen, wie sie durch die wirksame Betthöhe gegeben sind, können auf der Grundlage der Theorie des Strömungsrohrreaktors brauchbare Näherungsformeln für das Scale-up entwickelt werden. Das technische Potential von Festbett- und Wirbelbettzellen liegt hauptsächlich auf dem Gebiet der Metallabscheidung aus verdünnten Lösungen, Oxidation oder Reduktion von anorganischen und organischen Reaktanden niedriger Konzentration sowie der Umsetzung von Spurenbestandteilen, z. B. Verunreinigungen. Die Entwicklungsarbeiten konzentrieren sich im wesentlichen auf die Gewinnung von Metallen aus armen Erzen und Ablaugen niedriger Konzentration sowie auf die Reinigung von Abwässern.

    Notes: Corrosion and corrosion protection in systems utilizing new energy sources and fuels. New energy carriers such as methanol, ethanol, hydrogen, and biogas are of increasing interest for the substitution of the fossil fuels oil, natural gas, and coal. The analysis of production, handling, and use of such energy carriers with regard to materials and corrosion protection technology gives various results. Some of the problems can be solved by conventional technologies (production of ethanol and biogas). For others, further development work is needed (production of methanol; methanol and ethanol as substitute motor fuels). The problems encountered within the framework of a hydrogen energy technology are known and can be solved for the handling of hydrogen but they are still unsolved for special production processes (hybrid processes with sulfuric acid).
