Notes: Hearing the voices of children with chronic illness This qualitative study has aimed to explore children’s, parents’ and health professionals’ experience of childhood chronic illness. Seven families and their professional carers participated in semistrucured interviews. The children's interviews were augmented with a ‘drawing’ technique. A grounded theory approach facilitated data collection and analysis. This paper debates the perceived passivity of the voice of children in health care and research and illustrates data collection methods that seek to give children and other disadvantaged groups a voice. The children who participated in this study are described as competent interpreters of their world.

Notes: This paper presents some findings of a longitudinal study of nursing trainees in two British general hospitals concerning changes in attitudes to their work conditions, and compares the results with those of a cross-sectional study of the attitudes of trainees and qualified staff in the same two hospitals. Supporting the findings of previous research, the longitudinal study suggested that trainees become less attracted to work conditions during the course of training, and the cross-sectional study suggested that these changes would probably be reversed if and when trainees were taken on as qualified nurses. Since the widest gaps in attitudes between qualified staff and trainees reflected trainees' more unfavourable attitudes towards their influence over work tasks, opportunities to voice criticisms and to voice opinions, the findings are seen as evidence of a status gap between trainees' expected and achieved work autonomy.

Notes: Student and pupil nurses (64), from an initial sample of 117, completed repertory grids questionnaires and interviews on the first day of training, at 4 and 18 months. Measures of identification attraction and ideal/actual congruence were derived from the grids. Trainees were found to become more identified with and attracted to medical roles during training and less identified with and attracted to lower-status non-medical roles such as factory worker. Ideal/ actual congruence with medical roles other than trainee also increased. Some measures derived from the grids related to trainee ‘wastage’ and to satisfaction with the hospital.

Notes: Summary Twenty-eight patients with Behçet's Disease (BD), diagnosed according to at least one of the published and internationally recognized diagnostic criteria (Japanese Committee, International Committee, O'Duffy, Mason & Barnes and James) were compared with 56 controls with other rheumatic diseases paired by sex and age. This study aimed at comparing the sensitivity and specificity of the five diagnostic criteria chosen as well as the validation of the use of the new set of diagnostic criteria proposed by the International Committee in our population. We conclude that, in general, Brazilian patients with BD present demographic and clinical characteristics similar to those described in the world literature. The criteria proposed by the International Committee, although not the most accurate in our study, are a valid proposal for the universal unification of diagnostic criteria for BD.

Notes: Conformational energy calculations using the MM2 (molecular mechanics II) program are reported for diastereoisomeric α- and β-azabicyclanes (3-methyl-9-methoxy-9-phenyl-3-azabicyclo [3.3.1] nonanes) which are prototypical phenyl-axial and phenyl-equatorial opiates. After energy minimization, both compounds are found to prefer a chair-chair conformation of the piperidine and cyclohexane rings with two mirror image orientations of the phenyl and methoxyl groups. The calculations also indicate that the equilibrium conformations of the phenyl and methoxyl groups are very similar in the two diastereoisomers. A morphine-like conformation of the phenyl group was found to be very unfavorable because of a high barrier to rotation of the phenyl group. This does not have an apparent effect on opiate agonist properties, but does result in a significant weakening of the antagonist activity of the N-allyl derivative of α-azabicyclane. This is discussed in terms of a model for phenyl-axial and phenyl-equatorial opiate substrates which accounts for both similarities and differences in their structure-activity relationships. A detailed comparison is also made between the computed structures and those observed by x-ray crystallography with excellent agreement between the two.

Notes: A series of computer programs have been written for use in a multi-user resource center for biological microanalysis. They are tied together by a “Main Menu” program which acts as a traffic director and guides the investigator into whatever option is desired. These programs have been written with very clear instructions and interaction points. As a result, a complex handbook of options and responses is not required. Consquently, almost no training is required to use these programs as they are essentially self-explanatory. Extensive error checking has been included so that most errors are identified and corrections are requested without causing a program halt. Options available to the user provide for selected “region” analyses, elementally quantitative image analysis, and sorting of the resulting data files. A complete computer code printout is included in this report.
