Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Larven von Chilo suppressalis Walker verwerten einfache Kohlehydrate und Proteine ihrer Nahrung in ebenso hohem Ausmaße wie die meisten anderen phytophagen Lepidopteren-larven.
Notes: Abstract Larvae of the rice stem borer utilize simple carbohydrates and protein in their food at rates as high as most other lepidopterous larvae. The larvae also utilize starch at an unexpectedly high rate, in view of early evidences that the starch-hydrolyzing enzyme of the larval digestive tract is very weak and that the nutritive value of starch in synthetic food is very low. The results indicate that starch contained in the rice stem may be significant in the nutrition of the larvae in the field.

Notes: Summary Growth response of rice stem borer larvae to rice plants treated with 2,4-D was investigated. In greenhouse rearing experiments, growth of the larvae was improved when they fed on 2,4-D treated plants. In aseptic rearing experiments, the larvae also grew better on stems of rice plants treated during growth with 2,4-D than on untreated stems. On the other hand, larval growth was not improved by addition of 2,4-D to a diet of sterilized rice stems. The nitrogen content of the 2,4-D treated plant is higher than that of the untreated plant. Because of the importance of nitrogenous compounds for larval growth, the improved growth on 2,4-D treated plants was apparently caused by the increased nitrogen content of the plants, and not as a direct effect of 2,4-D itself. Apparently the increased infestation of rice stem borer larvae on rice plants treated with 2,4-D arises because of the ability of such plants to support good larval growth.

Notes: Ten positional isomers of dodecenyl acetate were analyzed by conventional combined gas chromatography/electron ionization mass spectrometry. The relative intensities of some predominant fragments in the isomers examined varied with the double-bond position in the chain. The mass spectra were interpreted in terms of the standard parameters, similarity coefficients, clustering weight and clustering coefficients. The original double-bond position in the acetates was located unambiguously.

Notes: A new procedure is presented for locating double-bund position in dodecenols. Ten isomers of chemically unmodified dodecenol were analysed by two kinds of mass spectrometers. A series of spectra obtained with a magnetic sector instrument were interpreted by analysing the similarity of mass spectral patterns based on a ‘fuzzy’ reasoning method, in which the intensity ratios of six diagnostic pairs of the predominant ions were defined as standard parameters. The method was tested with other series of spectra from a quadrupole mass spectrometer, and the original double-bond position in each isomer was located unambiguously.

Notes: Binary mixtures of positionally isomeric tetradecenols were by conventional combined gas chromatography/mass spectrometry without any chemical modification. Each spectrum in repetitive scanning was interpreted in terms of similarity of mass spectral patterns based on a fuzzy classification. This methodology is used for the rapid analysis of chromatographically unresolved isomers in a mixture.

Notes: The positional isomerism of seven dodecenols (Δ5-Δ11), without any prior chemical modification, was clearly elucidated by the conventional combined gas chromatography electron impact mass spectrometry. The relative abundances of some predominant fragment ions in the isomers examined were governed by the position of the original double bond. The intensity ratios of certain selected pairs of predominant ions are of diagnostic value for the determination of the double bond position. A procedure for the location of the double bond position is given.

Notes: Fourteen isomers of chemically unmodified hexadecenol were analysed by two types of quadrupole mass spectrometer, coupled with a gas chromatograph, for the location of the double-bond position. A series of spectra were interpreted in terms of mass spectral patterns on a fuzzy classification, in which the intensity ratios of six diagnostic pairs of the predominant ions were preferred in devising similarity indices. The accuracy of the method in the location of double-bond position was confirmed by testing with other series of spectra.

Notes: Acetates of 12 positionally isomeric tetradecenols (Δ2-Δ13) have been prepared and their mass spectra measured without any prior chemical modification. Comparison of spectra of all the isomers has shown the variation in intensities of some predominant fragments with the position of the double bond on the 14 carbons chain. The mass spectra were interpreted in terms of the relative intensity ratio of the fragment ion peaks to locate the double bond positions. A procedure for elucidation of the positional isomerism of tetradecenyl acetates is given.

Notes: Ten positional isomers (Δ2-Δ11) of unmodified dodecenal were analysed by conventional combined gas chromatography/electron impact mass spectrometry. The relative abundances of some predominant fragments in the isomers examined varied with the position of the original double bond. Eminent dominance of a particular isomer over the others in their relative intensities was observed at some fragment ion peaks. The intensity ratios of certain selected pairs of predominant fragment ions are of diagnostic value for the identification of the double bond position. A procedure for the characterization of the double bond position in the chain is given.
