Notes: Summary The characteristics of the cytoskeleton of myofibroblasts were examined immunohistochemically in 10 extra-abdominal desmoid tumours, 3 palmar and 2 plantar fibromatoses and 5 nodular fasciites; in the cultured cells of one desmoid tumour, and also ultrastructurally in 3 desmoid tumours. Polyclonal anti-desmin antibody reacted with the cells in 7 extra-abdominal desmoid tumours, 1 palmar fibromatosis, 1 plantar fibromatosis and 3 nodular fasciites. Monoclonal antidesmin antibody reacted with cells in only 2 desmoid tumours. Desmin-positive spindle cells were scattered throughout these lesions. There were no marked ultrastructural differences between desmin-positive and desmin-negative desmoids. All specimens except one specimen of nodular fasciitis showed immunoreactivity for alpha-smooth muscle actin and vimentin. Muscle actin-positive cells were observed in all specimens. Cultured cells gave positive reactions with polyclonal desmin antibody as well as to vimentin antibodies and two preparations of actin antibodies, whereas the original tumour did not react with desmin antibody. The present studies suggested that the cytoskeleton of some myofibroblasts in both neoplastic and reactive lesions resembles that of smooth muscle cells.

Notes: Summary The aetiological agent of cat scratch disease (CSD) has been unknown for more than 30 years. Recently, a micro-organism clearly shown with Warthin-Starry silver (W-S) stain was found and thought to be a possible cause of the disease. In this study, 32 cases of regional lymphadenopathy histologically compatible with CSD and 20 contrasting cases of lymphadenopathy were examined retrospectively with W-S stain. W-S positive pleomorphic organisms were clearly demonstrated in 20 of the 32 suspected cases of CSD, but in none of the other cases. The onset of disease in these 20 cases with W-S positive organisms occurred between July and January. This seasonal variation in the onset of disease was highly significant (P〈0.005) and was not due to a single epidemic. Moreover, some characteristic morphological features of the organism were found by electron microscopic observations. Ultrastructurally, the organism was a bacterium showing a chain-like arrangement, septal formation, branching and clubbed ends.

Notes: Summary Light and electron microscopic findings in papillary endothelial hyperplasia of the mandible in a 49-year-old female are reported. The endothelial cell-lined papillary projection into a cystic lumen was examined by light microscopy and characteristic features of the endothelial cells were found by electron microscopy. Factor VIII-related antigen was demonstrated in the endothelial cells by the immunoperoxidase technique.

Notes: Abstract We report herein a case of a 31 year old housewife who underwent an excisional biopsy for a well-circumscribed lump in her breast. The lump contained 2 histological patterns, namely, fibroadenoma and tubular adenoma. These patterns had no transitional zone, were distinct and changed abruptly. This case was histologically diagnosed as “a fibroadenoma in tubular adenoma of the breast, benign”, with no other such case ever having been reported in Japan. The histological findings of this case, convinced us that tubular adenoma is closely related to fibroadenoma.
