Notes: Data from field tracer experiments are interpreted to evaluate the adequacy of an advection-dispersion model for simulating field conditions. A stimulus-response approach based on chemical reactor theory was applied. Two different pulse stimuli at an injection well resulted in responses in two observation wells located at distances of 8 and 17 m, respectively, from the injection well. The wells are perforated over the entire aquifer thickness of 1–2 m. The behavior of the two conservative tracers agreed closely with each other. Breakthrough response curves revealed extended trailing edges (tailing), especially at the nearer well. A two-domain model is employed to extend the simple advection-dispersion equation to account for the observed tailing. Response curves of concentrations were fitted with finite-difference simulations using the two-domain model. The simulations using the two-domain model agreed well with the field observations. The responses at the more distant well were characterized by values of dispersivity equal to or slightly smaller than those at the nearer well.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The characterisation of non-cohesive sandy and gravelly aquifer materials from bore cores of a depth of up to 15 m requires samples which have to be taken air-tight and with little physical disturbance. To this end, we decided to use a double core barrel for the sampling whose inner tube was replaced by a liner of translucent hard polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. With this drilling technique, the penetration is supported by a percussion hammer which is placed direclty in front of the core barrel. The sample which enters the PVC tube is plugged at the edges immediately after the removal from the core barrel to prevent air from penetrating the sample. As an example of the applicability of this method, we measured the coating of materials surfaces which is available for reductible iron in such samples. An analysis of the speciation of Fe allowed to make conclusions on the past activity of the aquifer system in the presence of a leaching old landfill. We thus believe that the procedure chosen for sampling solid materials from the subsurface can be used more frequently in the future, to discuss the leaching behavior of contaminated sites.
