Notes: [Auszug] A prototrophic diploid heterozygous for eight recessive biochemical markers was synthesized2. It had the following genotype : alpan-l nic-10 inos-3 nic-3 "2 6t me-15 ad-l o----------- __ -f pdx-3 _____ __ where a and b are the loci controlling the mating system; pan, nic, inos, me, ad, leu ...

Notes: [Auszug] Irreversible senescence in fungi—a cytoplasmic condition—may be the result of a breakdown in the maintenance of the accuracy of protein synthesis. Premature senescence in Podospora can be induced by treatments which may reduce the accuracy of amino-acid incorporation. A predicted ...

Notes: Abstract Organisms have the ability to harness energy from the environment to create order and to reproduce. From early error-prone systems natural selection acted to produce present day organisms with high accuracy in the synthesis of macromolecules. The environment imposes strict limits on reproduction, so evolution is always accompanied by the discarding of a large proportion of the less fit cells, or organisms. Sexual reproduction depends on an immortal germline and a soma which may be immortal or mortal. Higher animals living in hazardous environments have evolved aging and death of the soma for the benefit of the ongoing germline.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - In their News and Views article "Step-by-step into carcinogenesis"1, Cairns and Logan discuss the finding that oncogenic DNA can transform immortal established cell lines, such as mouse 3T3, but not diploid cells which have limited growth potential. They write that: "One of the built-in ...

Notes: [Auszug] IT has often been suggested that ageing results from accumulated defects in certain macromolecules or cellular structures. Because the survival of higher organisms depends on the normal functions of dif-ferentiated cells, an important possibility is that ageing impairs or disrupts the necessary ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - Increasing numbers of transgenic mice are now being generated which have heterozygous or homozygous nonfunctional genes known to be important in humans.
