Notizen: Amorphous carbon thin films were prepared at 30, 200, and 450 °C by magnetron sputtering of a graphite target. The surface structure and chemical bonding (sp2/sp3) of the carbon films were characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and Raman spectroscopy. STM images show that graphite microcrystallites of 20–40 A(ring) in size are present at the surfaces of all the films and the number of the microcrystallites increases with increasing substrate temperature. The microcrystallites often contain structural defects. Raman measurements show that increasing the substrate temperature results in an increase in the sp2-bonded fraction of carbon atoms and a decrease in the microstructural defects. These results indicate that the microstructural changes are correlated with changes in the chemical bonding ratio (sp3/sp3) and no diamond microcrystallites are present in the amorphous carbon. A three-dimensional atomic structure of the graphite microcrystallites is discussed in terms of turbostratic graphite.

Notizen: The masseter and temporalis muscles were studied ultrastructurally in eight cases suffering from restricted mouth opening and TMJ ankylosis. The changes varied from slight degeneration of muscle fibers, such as accumulation of lipid or lipofuscin deposits, Z-band streaming and derangement of myofilaments, in one case to moderate or severe changes of muscle atrophy and necrosis in the remaining seven cases. Nemaline bodies were also observed in one of these seven cases. In addition to these muscle changes neural degeneration especially of myelinated nerves were found in three of the cases studied. The present findings showed that in spite of the diversity of the underlying factors affecting the joint, there was many similarities in the changes observed within the muscle. It is postulated that these degenerative muscle changes probably play an important role in restricted mouth opening and TMJ ankyiosis, and that some of these muscle pathology may be the result of neural involvement.

Notizen: The masseter and temporalis muscles were investigated ultrastructurally in 2 patients having fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). Results showed atrophy and necrosis of muscle fibres. Both cases contained cartilage which was calcified in the second case and was associated with degenerating chondrocytes. The blood vessels showed various changes, with haematoma formation and large fibrin deposits. Some of the fibrin deposits seen in the second case were surrounded with cartilage. This suggests that the cartilage probably forms as a reaction to an old haemorrhage. It is possible that the effect of the mutant gene found in FOP is on blood vessels rather than the normal regulatory mechanisms of the inducible osteogenic precursor cells. These degenerating blood vessels often result in haemorrhage and fibrin deposits; the fibrosis, cartilage or bone formation are probably secondary changes. Amianthoid fibres found in the tendon of the temporalis muscles of the second case, together with the other changes of fibrosis and cartilage formation, account for the severe restricted mouth opening suffered by these patients.

Notizen: Inverted ductal papillomas are rare tumours of minor salivary glands. A case is reported on the lower lip of a 50–year-old man. The tumour showed a characteristic endophytic growth pattern and was composed of bulbous papillary projections of basaloid cells dilating and filling the superficial portion of the excretory duct. Histologically, inverted ductal papillomas resemble the inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses, but are completely benign and are not associated with malignant change.

Notizen: Background:  Reported cases of syphilis in the United States, Europe and elsewhere are increasing in number. Clinical manifestations are protean, and oral biopsies may be taken where the diagnosis is unsuspected, but data on the histopathology of oral mucosal syphilis are sparse. Methods:  The histopathology of five oral lesions in patients with serologically proven syphilis was reviewed. Results:  There were two cases of primary syphilis, one secondary and two tertiary. Epithelial hyperplasia was present in three cases, and was pseudocarcinomatous in one case of primary syphilis, and psoriasiform in the secondary lesion, where heaped-up epithelium surrounded a defined crater covered by flatter epithelium. Plasma cell (primary and secondary disease) and granulomatous (tertiary) infiltrates were prominent. Other features observed were endarteritis (5/5), plasma cell neuritis (3/5) and spirochetes (4/5).Conclusions:  Although no single microscopic feature is specific, a diagnosis of syphilis should be considered where there is unusual epithelial hyperplasia, granulomatous or plasma cell-predominant chronic inflammation, endarteritis and neuritis.

Notizen: A case of myositis ossificans circumscripta (fibrodysplasia ossificans) of the masseter muscle has been studied ultrastructurally. It showed atrophy of muscle fibres with deranged myofilaments, adjacent to dense fibrous tissue, osteoid and bone. A large number of the cells found in the dense fibrous tissue showed vacuolation and separation of membrane bound vesicles similar to matrix vesicles released by chondroblasts and osteoblasts during calcification. It is possible that, as in normal calcification of bone, these vesicles are responsible for initiating calcification in the ectopic bone found in the present condition. It was also shown that most of the blood vessel found in the blocks examined exhibited various degrees of degenerative changes. The finding of arterial occlusion together with capillary degeneration suggests that the main changes in myositis ossificans circumscripta may be those affecting blood vessels leading to ischaemic muscle atrophy. The fibrosis and ossification that follow are probably secondary changes.

Notizen: Abstract Sperm are disseminated in vermetid gastropods by spermatophores released freely into the ocean. Spermatophores from 7 species of vermetids, including 3 genera, were obtained from reproductively active males or offshore plankton tows or both. Each vermetid spermatophore consists of a sperm mass containing highly ordered eupyrene and apyrene sperm enveloped concentrically by 3 transparent capsules. Generic and specific differences occur in the size, shape and composition of the sperm mass and capsule. The complexly layered spermatophore is assembled in the male reproductive tract, which includes and elaborate set of pallial reproductive glands for capsule production. Spermatophores are liberated by males into the seawater, and there dispersed by water movements. Some of these drifting spermatophores become entangled in the mucous feeding nets of female vermetids and are then activated by feeding movements. Activation of the complex ejaculatory apparatus appears to result from an interplay of osmotic and mechanical mechanisms. Spermatophores remain viable in the laboratory for 12 to 20 h after release from the male; after 20 h, the sperm mass breaks down and the sperm become immotile. Plankton tows capture some spermatophores with motile sperm and others in which sperm are no longer active. Evolutionary implications of the relationship between production of pelagic spermatophores, sessile mode of life and other aspects of vermetid biology are discussed.
