Notes: Abstract A transition zone in the otoliths of orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) is described where annulus width decreases markedly. For fish sampled at spawning time, the relationship between gonad stage and the presence or absence of a transition zone is consistent with the hypothesis that this zone marks the onset of maturity, if allowance is made for some error in gonad staging and identification of the zone. Another data set from a non-spawning area after the spawning season is not consistent with the hypothesis. However, these latter data are considered less reliable because of the small size of the fish in the sample and difficulties in determining, outside the spawning season, whether a fish has been reproductively active. This hypothesis was used to provide estimates of the median age (30 yr) and length (31 cm) at the onset of maturity for the Chatham Rise, New Zealand population. These estimates are unaffected by the biases associated with the usual ogive method of estimation.

Notes: Abstract Mean age and length at onset of maturity were estimated for orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) populations off New Zealand, Namibia, and Great Britain. Significant between-area differences were apparent in both these parameters. Implications of the between-area differences on stock structure of orange roughy in New Zealand waters are discussed. A proportional relationship between age at onset of maturity and modal size of fish in the mature population is demonstrated. This is consistent with later-maturing fish experiencing a longer period at a pre-maturity growth rate that is relatively faster than the rate of somatic growth after maturity.

Notes: Binder removal in small and large green compacts of AlN ceramic was investigated bycombining different in situ measuring techniques. Dimensional changes, wetting behaviourand weight loss were measured by a thermooptical measuring device (TOM). Thermaldiffusivity was measured by the laser-flash technique and evolved gas species were identifiedby FTIR analysis. The properties of the binder changed with increasing temperature. Wettingproperties drastically improved between 150°C and 350°C. The activation energy for the ratedetermining step of binder decomposition was derived from weight loss data using the kineticfield method. It was 180 kJ/Mol up to a temperature of 350°C, where it strongly increased. The binder enhanced thermal conductivity of the green compacts – especially in the last stageof binder removal - which was explained by its location in the vicinity of the contacts betweenthe AlN particles. With large samples and high heating rate a superposition of weight lossreactions which could be clearly separated in other experiments was observed. This wasattributed to the effect of the high partial pressure of evolved gases in the pore system of thegreen compacts

Notes: : Differential scanning calorimetry was used to investigate denaturation characteristics of pork muscle proteins from carriers and noncarriers of the RN-gene. Pork from RN-carriers deviated from noncarriers in maximum denaturation temperatures and denaturation enthalpy, with proteins of RN-carriers being the most heat-labile. Correlation studies on the results showed that water-holding capacity was significantly correlated to changes in enthalpy of the population mainly representing myosin tails and sarcoplasmic proteins (p 〈 0.001). Finally, the influence of ultimate pH and preheating on thermal characteristics of porcine muscle proteins was studied. Myosin tails and sarcoplasmic proteins were most sensitive to pH changes, while myosin heads were most sensitive to preheating simulating stress-induced temperature increases.

Notes: In trimmed muscle types of four game species the dry matter, crude protein, crude fat, ash, Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn contents were determined. Samples of the m. semimembranosus and m. longissimus dorsi of each of 10 red deer, fallow deer, roe-deer and wild boars from the Southwestern region of Hungary in the end-winter period were analyzed, and mean values, related to dry matter, were compared. The game muscle samples had much lower crude fat, more Ca, P and microelements, especially Cu and Fe, when compared with published data for the respective muscles of domestic animals.

Notes: A method has been developed for time-resolved Raman measurements under shock loading to examine the first-order Raman line of diamond (ω0=1333 cm−1). The diamond samples were subjected to uniaxial strain along the [110] direction to a longitudinal stress of 121 kbar. The observed spectral changes are consistent with frequency shifts calculated according to a phenomenological model used to describe stress effects on the zone center phonons of cubic materials.
