    Notes: Mycobacterium fortuitum is a rapidly growing mycobacterium found in soil and water throughout the world. It can cause diseases in immunocompetent patients, usually resulting in localized skin and soft tissue infections. Cervical lymphadenitis caused by M. fortuitum is rare. We report a 46-year-old woman in whom skin lesions of cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa, leucocytoclastic vasculitis and Sweet's syndrome had successively developed before the diagnosis of cervical lymphadenitis caused by M. fortuitum was made. The skin lesions responded to colchicine and systemic corticosteroids but recurred intermittently. After establishment of the diagnosis, she received treatment with clarithromycin and ciprofloxacin. The cervical lymph nodes decreased in size 6 months later and no more new skin lesions were found.

    Notes: Self-pollination of a hermaphroditic cultivar normally gives a ratio of 2 : 1 hermaphrodite to female papayas with genotypes M2m and mm, respectively. Much effort has been dedicated to marking the sexual types of papaya at the seedling stage to distinguish hermaphroditic from female papayas. A hermaphroditic papaya mutant (SR*) has been obtained, derived from the ‘Sunrise’ papaya cultivar mutant. Self-pollination of the mutant resulted in all progenies being hermaphroditic. The genotype of the female was lethal, as a result of a lethal gene being linked to the mm female gene complex in this case. However, a 3 : 1 segregation ratio was obtained from the progeny of the hermaphroditic cultivar ‘Thailand’ crossed with SR*, indicating that all genotypes survived. Homozygous genotypes (M2M2) would be lethal according to Storey's model. Randomly selected F1 plants of the ‘Thailand’ SR* combination were self-pollinated to obtain an F2 generation. The F2 segregation ratio suggested that the SR* mutant had a different form of the M2 allele, now designated as M@, which allowed the dominant M@M2 to survive in cross combinations. Genetic study has proved that SR* has the M@ml genotype, a new mutant. It is capable of producing all hermaphroditic papaya progenies.

    Notes: Background  Interleukin (IL)-19, a member of the IL-10 family, signals through the IL-20R1/IL-20R2 heterodimer, which is shown to be involved in abnormal keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation. Little is known about its in vitro biological functions or its role in psoriasis.Objectives  To investigate the role of IL-19 in the psoriatic process.Methods  The expression of keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) transcripts was measured by polymerase chain reaction in CD8+ T cells treated with IL-19. Next, we developed monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to measure the levels of IL-19 in the sera of patients with psoriasis and healthy volunteers using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In addition, we performed immunohistochemical staining on psoriatic skin and normal controls.Results  We found that IL-19 upregulated KGF transcripts on CD8+ T cells. Patients with psoriasis had a lower level of IL-19 in serum than healthy volunteers. The difference between these two groups was statistically significant (P 〈 0·05). IL-19 expression was seen in basal and suprabasal keratinocytes in a continuous pattern, and was increased in psoriatic epidermis.Conclusions  These results suggest that IL-19 plays a role in the complex pathological cytokine network in psoriasis.

    Notes: An 8-year-old Taiwanese girl had a 6-month history of a relapsing papulovesicular eruption on her face that resembled hydroa vacciniforme (HV). Histologically, there was a dense infiltration of large atypical lymphocytic cells expressing CD8. TCR-γ gene rearrangement study revealed a monoclonal band present in the DNA extracted from the specimen. A diagnosis of CD8+ cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) was made. The patient was treated with Chinese herbal drugs and her skin lesions waxed and waned. At this writing, 11 months after establishment of the diagnosis, the skin lesions have been limited to the facial area and no definite evidence of systemic involvement is noted. To our knowledge, this is the first case of CD8+ primary CTCL with clinical features resembling HV.

    Notes: Tumours of smooth muscle origin, either solitary or multiple, are occasionally found in immunocompromised patients, particularly in children with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Most of the reported AIDS-associated leiomyomatous neoplasms have been found in the visceral organs, and the tumour cells all possessed the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) genome. Here we present a 32-year-old-man with AIDS who developed three skin nodules on his lower left extremity. No other tumorous lesions were found using computed tomography scans. Two of the three nodules were resected for pathological examination. Histologically, both tumours were well circumscribed and located in the subcutis. The tumours were composed of interlacing fascicles of spindle-shaped cells with prominent vasculature and lymphocytic infiltration. No pleomorphism, mitosis or necrosis was seen. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were reactive to smooth muscle actin and desmin. Angioleiomyoma was diagnosed. EBV-encoded small RNAs were also demonstrated in the nucleus of the tumour cells by in situ hybridization but no EBV receptor (CD21) or latent membrane protein (LMP)-1 was found in the tumour cells. No human herpesvirus (HHV)-8 genome was detected in the lesion using polymerase chain reaction analysis. The results of this study indicated that EBV containing subcutaneous angioleiomyoma was another neoplasm that must be considered in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection who develop skin nodules. The role of EBV in the pathogenesis of this unique neoplasm is still unknown.

    Notes: Summary We report a woman with a lupus vulgaris-like skin eruption caused by Mycobacterium fortuitum. The presence of mycobacteria was confirmed with tissue culture and also the detection of mycobacterial heat shock protein 65 (hsp65) DNA in the biopsy specimen. The eruption resolved after treatment with amikacin and clarithromycin. Lupus vulgaris-like lesions might be included in the clinical spectrum of infections caused by rapidly growing mycobacteria.

    Notes: Abstract This paper introduces the application of Haar wavelets to the optimal control synthesis for linear time-varying systems. Based upon some useful properties of Haar wavelets, a special product matrix, a related coefficient matrix, and an operational matrix of backward integration are proposed to solve the adjoint equation of optimization. The results obtained by the proposed Haar approach are almost the same as those obtained by the conventional Riccati method.

    Notes: Abstract The state analysis and optimal control of time-varying discrete systems via Haar wavelets are the main tasks of this paper. First, we introduce the definition of discrete Haar wavelets. Then, a comparison between Haar wavelets and other orthogonal functions is given. Based upon some useful properties of the Haar wavelets, a special product matrix and a related coefficient matrix are proposed; also, a shift matrix and a summation matrix are derived. These matrices are very effective in solving our problems. The local property of the Haar wavelets is applied to shorten the calculation procedures.
