    Notes: Abstract Both technical analysis and artificial intelligence are popular and promising approaches for the construction of intelligent financial application systems, but any particular method alone might not be sufficient. Instead of pursuing the construction of a perfect system using any one particular technique, this paper focuses on the study of the Intelligent Stock Selection Decision Support System (ISSDSS) that adopts both traditional technical analysis and artificial intelligence in dealing with the stock selection problem. ISSDSS analyzes the Taiwan stock market using various technical analysis techniques including technical indicators, charts analysis, Japanese candlesticks philosophy, and Dow theory, giving the basis for the evaluation of the price and trend of stocks, trading signals, and trading prices. AI techniques built upon fuzzy decision rules are employed to double-check the results from technical analysis. The performance of ISSDSS was evaluated by simulating the stock selection in the Taiwan stock market from January 1990 to April 1995. The result confirms that the synergy of technical analysis and artificial intelligence outperforms systems using any one particular technique alone.

    Notes: A mathematical model and iterative correction algorithm are described for the exact solution of separation systems which contain interlinked columns in which some stages have two liquid phases and others have a vapor and liquid phase. The correction algorithm is based on Newton's method and provides for simultaneous correction of all iteration variables. The derivatives are calculated analytically from the model equations. The separation of a binary mixture which forms a heterogeneous azeotrope is analyzed. Modifications to the correction algorithm which provide for fixed condenser temperature and fixed product flows are described. The separation of butanol and water is used to illustrate the method.

    Notes: Analysis of four three-component diffusion problems by means of the Stefan-Maxwell equations is presented. In three of these problems heterogeneous chemical reactions are occurring at a catalytic surface. Characteristic curves are presented for the better understanding of the analytical solutions. The results of one of the exact solutions are compared with those by the effective diffusion-coefficient approach.

    Notes: The unsteady diffusion-controlled evaporation of a pure fluid into a multicomponent mixture is studied by a boundary-layer method. An expression is obtained for the volume of vapor produced by the evaporating species as a function of time. It is shown that the result can be interpreted in terms of an effective diffusivity of the type proposed by Wilke and by Stewart. It is further demonstrated that the boundary-layer method predicts a sweep-diffusion effect.

    Notes: Isopycnic banding by density gradient centrifugation was used to measure density changes in complexes formed by the immobilization of each of four different immunoglobulins (IgG) (bovine, dog, rabbit, and sheep) on polystyrene latex beads (0.109 ± 0.0025 μm diam). Subtractive measurements of density changes allowed calculation of the mass of immobilized lgG under varying experimental conditions. The immobilization data were correlated with adsorption isotherms which incorporated charge repulsion forces. The effects of pH and NaCl concentration on the immobilization were studied for the latex-bovine lgG system. It was found that the mass of immobilized immunoglobulins was increased from 10 to 20% by removing the lgG from its isoelectric range.
