Notes: This paper introduces a novel economical direct metal forming process, which combines oftraditional plasma welding processes and layer manufacturing process to fabricate sound metal part.As high heat inputs during welding could affect parts surface quality, a CCD visual monitoringsystem was used to monitor the process. To avoid the interferer from plasma arc light, the spectrum ofplasma arc was measured and analyzed, and a narrow band filter system was designed. The images ofmolten pool were analyzed, and a fuzzy-PID controller was used to control the molten pool size.Experimental results prove that using this system can improve parts surface quality

Notes: Twin-roll thin strip casting process combines casting and hot rolling process into a singlestep; in which melt and solid states exist in the casting region, so its deformation is more complexthan rolling process. In this paper, Anand’s model, a unified visco-plasticity constitutive model, wasemployed to simulate the highly nonlinear behavior in the twin-roll casting process. Anand model’sparameters were regressed based on compression tests at various temperature and strain rate formagnesium alloy AZ31. To calculate the thermal mechanical stresses, the thermal flow of twin-rollcasting process was simulated firstly; then stresses were calculate, in which the temperature fieldresult of thermal flow was imposed as body load, and a small displacement load along rollertangential direction was imposed simultaneously in order to simulate rolling action. The deformationresults can well describe the forward slip zone, backward slip zone and melt eddy zone in the castingregion. Based on the results, the applicability of Anand’s model on twin-roll casting process wasdiscussed

Notes: The presence of residual stress in aircraft aluminum components can give rise todistortion after machining. Excessive distortion may result in the rejection of a part or the need forcostly and time-consuming rework prior to placement in service. The purpose of this research wasto develop a methodology for the prediction of machining-induced distortions of residually stressedaircraft aluminum components. Numerical simulation results show that the magnitude of machiningdistortion is strongly related to the square root of Stain Energy Density W or Stress Range [removed info]σ .The experimental results demonstrate good agreement with the predicted machining distortions of7075T73 bulkheads. It included that the original residual stress in the blocks of aircraft aluminumcomponent is one of key factors to cause machining distortion

Notes: The functional materials such as sapphire, silicon wafer etc. are processed efficientlywith ultra-smooth surface for the demand of the rapid development of the IC industry. The precisedouble sided polishing process is one of the main methods of getting the ultra-smooth surface forthese materials. This paper introduces the structure and characteristic of the precise double sidedpolishing machine with a precise pressure control system equipped a new type electro-pneumaticdigital servo valve. The works, such as machine design, development of the control system andoptimization of process parameters etc. are carried out to meet the requirement of the precise doublesided polishing machining process. This equipment has the characteristic of high machiningprecision and precise control capability, so it can be applied to the ultra-precise machining of theultra-thin sapphire, silicon wafers etc

Notes: Strip casting is a promising route to directly produce magnesium alloy sheet by twinroll casting method. As-cast strips with proper microstructure and good surface quality arerequested to serve as next rolling feedstock. In order to restrain the coarse dendrite growth and getuniform grain, a new method of in-line heat treatment was proposed. The as-cast strip was dippedinto an oil tank after exiting the rolls and then was quenched with oil at various temperatures. Theeffect of oil temperature, casting speed and pouring temperature on microstructure and mechanicalproperties of cast strip was investigated

Notes: Strip continuous casting by twin roll method is a rapidly solidifying process, which can directly produce thin strips, reduce energy consumption and product cost of various metal materials. However, the casting of magnesium alloys with large solidifying ranges lead to some problems such as surface and internal defect, variation of solidification finish point for Mg sheet. In this research, the process conditions for a twin roll caster are analyzed by thermal flow simulation. The effect of type and dimension of delivery nozzles on production of Mg alloy are studied. A proper match of the setback distance of thin nozzle and casting speed is studied by thermal flow simulation, based on the characteristics of Mg melt handling, flow dynamics control and solidification

Notes: Twin- roll casting of magnesium alloys is a rapidly solidifying process, which can directlyproduce thin strips from molten metal. In this paper, based on a pilot vertical type twin-roll caster, 3Dmodels of twin-roll casting process were used for simulation of thermal flow and solidification ondepending of casting speed, molten pool level and pouring temperature. The effect of side dams onthermal flow behavior was also considered. Based on the analyzed results, a proper concave slotnozzle was designed to compensate temperature variation across the width of strip. Comparing withparallel type slot nozzle, it can adjust temperature distribution along the roll width continuously byadopting proper concave curves, which is more flexible than rectification boards delivery system.Strips of magnesium alloy AZ31 were produced in the pilot caster with the concave slot nozzle. Theexperiments show that surface quality of as cast strip was improved by using the new type of nozzle

Notes: Double sided polishing process has become a main machining method for silicon waferfinishing process, but it is difficult to get ultra-smooth surface with the very stringent machiningconditions. In this paper, the mechanism of ultra-smooth surface machining process was studied, themain parameters affecting the surface quality of silicon wafer, such as the polishing pad and carrierrotation speed, polishing press, polishing slurries etc. , were discussed and optimized, thenultra-smooth surface of silicon wafer with Ra 0.4nm has been obtained based on the above study. Anew double sided polishing machine with computer control system equipped with a digitalcontrolled press valve was developed, and the ultra-smooth machining process of silicon wafer wasestablished in this paper
