Notes: The effect of chemical treatment on the reverse osmosis (RO) separation characteristics of sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) (SPPO) thin film composite membranes was investigated. The effects of the concentrations of aqueous solutions of formaldehyde, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, sodium hydroxide, and treatment time on the RO separation characteristics of the composite membranes with ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 2.14 and 2.50 meq/g in various combinations are reported in detail. The results indicate some enhancement in RO separation characteristics of the SPPO/polysulfone (PS) composite membrane under the best conditions of the chemical treatment.

Notes: For the purposes of new membrane material development for pervaporation separation based on crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), IR spectroscopy and DSC were used to characterize the crosslinking reaction and the imidization of the (PVA)-amic acid system. The IR spectra and the thermal analysis were performed on specimens that had been reacted for several different times at 150°C. The crosslinking reaction between the hydroxy groups of PVA and the carboxylic groups of amic acid was faster than the imidization of the amic acid. The best reaction times were about 30 min for the crosslinking reaction and 90 min for the imidization. The effects of the reaction time and the amic acid content on the thermal and mechanical properties have also been investigated.

Notes: The enhancement effect of the addition of nitromethane into the coating solution of sulfonated sodium poly(phenylene oxide) (SPPONa) polymer for the synthesis of sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide)/polysulfone (SPPO/PS) thin film composite membranes on reverse osmosis (RO) separation characteristic was studied. The effect of gamma-ray irradiation on the SPPO/PS thin film composite membranes was also evaluated when the membrane samples were in the wet and dry conditions. The composite membranes were also subjected to a chemical treatment combined with gamma-ray irradiation in both wet and dry conditions in the hope of obtaining the maximum possible enhancement under each treatment. However, the experimental data of this combined treatment indicated the possibility of some degradation of the SPPO/PS composite membranes.

Notes: The kinetics and molecular weight distributions (MWD) of the gamma-ray induced polymerization of styrene in methanol were studied at 35°C, at low conversions and over a dose rate range of 2.76 × 103 to 2.74 × 104 rad/hr. The data obtained at low initial methanol content agreed with previously obtained results and the MWD of the polystyrene formed yielded a single unimodal peak with M̄n in the range of 35,000-480,000. However, at high initial methanol content and low dose rates, at least three peaks were clearly discernible over wide molecular weight distributions. The existence of these peaks is related to the kinetic data and the formation of three distinguishable regions in the polymerization system.

Notes: Styrene was polymerized in emulsion with initiation by γ-rays at a dose rate of 0.6 Mrad/hr. Polymerization rates were as expected from previous reports by others. No branching or crosslinking was detectable, and the Mw/Mn ratio of the polystyrene did not change significantly during the course of the polymerization reaction. The molecular weight of the product polymer decreased with increasing conversion, in contrast to the behavior of chemically initiated emulsion polymerizations. Monomer-free polystyrene does not degrade under the same radiation conditions, and the progressive decrease of polymer molecular weight with conversion is shown to result from the presence of monomer.

Notes: The reverse osmosis properties of ionically crosslinked polyacrylic acid membranes were investigated in terms of the salt separation of a 0.1% NaCl solution and water flux. The membranes were synthesized and crosslinked with the metal ion Al3+ via the dry casting technique described in a previous paper. The effect of such variables as the polymer concentration in the casting solution, the ratios of solvents used (DMF/H2O), the ratio of monomer to the crosslinking agent (AA/Al), the evaporation time and temperature, and the nonsolvent nature and treatment times were studied in some detail. The most important variable was found to be the length and nature of the treatment in the nonsolvents acetone and methanol. In the best series of the membranes that were synthesized, fluxes of more than 3.0 gfd, with salt separations at the 80%-85% level, were obtained.

Notes: The synthesis of nylon 4 (polypyrrolidone) by the anionic polymerization of 2-pyrrolidone through the use of the CO2/potassium pyrrolidonate catalyst system for use in preparing polymer membranes for separation purposes was investigated in detail. The effects of the quantity of CO2, the potassium pyrrolidonate catalyst, and the reaction temperature on the yield and molecular weights of the nylon 4 were studied. At reaction temperatures of 50°C and a reaction time of 120 hr, a yield of 50.9% with intrinsic viscosity of 4.42 (corresponding to Mn of 108,200 and Mw of 135,850) was obtained. The molecular weight distributions of the nylon 4 were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) using m-cresol as the eluting solvent and were found to have a relatively narrow distribution.

Notes: The permeation and diffusion of helium, nitrogen, methane, ethane, and propane through γ-irradiated polyethylene films were investigated. These studies were carried out with two objectives in mind: (1) to determine the effect of crosslinking by γ irradiation on permeability and diffusivity using the gas molecules as molecular probes; and (2) to study the plasticizing effects of the low hydrocarbons on the polyethylene film. The γ-ray-induced crosslinking efficiency of polyethylene was investigated in the following irradiation atmospheres: vacuum, acetylene, and nitrogen-acetylene mixtures. Results showed that irradiation in acetylene decreased the crosslinking efficiency while an acetylene-nitrogen atmosphere increased the efficiency compared to irradiation in vacuum. Both the permeation constants and the diffusion coefficients were found to decrease with increasing irradiation dose while the activation energies increased. The permeation constants of the organic gases through polyethylene increased with molecular diameter while the diffusion coefficients decreased. This increase in permeability was attributed to an increase in the solubility due to solubilization of the membrane by the penetrant. For example, the molecular diameter of propane is 4.397 Å compared with 2.807 Å for methane; however, propane permeated the polyethylene film at a rate twice that of methane. Nitrogen and methane have approximately the same molecular diameters - 2.7085 and 2.807 Å, respectively - but owing to the plasticizing effect of methane, it permeated the film at a rate three times greater than that of nitrogen. It is interesting to note that the stronger the plasticizing ability of the penetrant, the greater the effect of the irradiation dose. The permeability of propane decreased by 40.7%, while the permeability of helium decreased by 6.4% after an irradiation dose of 50 Mrad.

Notes: Composite reverse osmosis membranes of ionically crosslinked poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) have been prepared. The process consists of coating a porous polysulfone membrane with a thin layer of dilute solution of PAA, drying the thin liquid layer, and ionically crosslinking the PAA in solutions of different salts. The influence of some important preparation parameters on the properties of these membranes was investigated. It was found that all these membranes possessed ion exchange properties and could be ion exchanged; some of them have been found to be suitable for the desalination of low concentration salt solutions. By comparison to cellulose acetate (CA) membranes, higher rejection of phenols may be an interesting property of these membranes.
