Notizen: A new approach to prepare hydrophilic porous membranes is presented. Films and fabric made of polyethylene were grafted with styrene by simultaneous γ-irradiation. The grafting behaviors of fabric are quite different from bulk films which exhibit the well-known gel effect in styrene-methanol mixture solutions. The grafting rate for fabric increased monotonically with monomer concentration, and no maximum appeared on dilution with methanol. The copolymer films were further sulfonated to prepare hydrophilic membranes. Surface structure of membranes and fabrics were examined with optical and electron microscopy. For the fabric, the original smooth surface turned into rugged surface with different sizes of cavities. For membranes, the buldgelike bubbles are found when swollen with water. These bubbles changed into cavities after drying in vacuum at elevated temperature. The mechanism for the formation of such a structure is discussed. The electrical resistance of such membrane was low enough to be useful as battery separator.

Notizen: Viscometry was used to follow the epoxidation of polybutadiene and styrene-butadiene triblock copolymers (SBS) with monoperoxyphthalic acid (MPPA). Long reaction periods lead to an abnormal increase and then drop in reduced viscosity. The increasing viscosity is due to repulsion between oxirane group and its ring-opening product with phthalic acid, while the viscosity drop can be correlated with a decrease of molecular weight. Long-term storage of the epoxidized polyenes in the reaction solution containing phthalic acid, which is the derived product from MPPA, also leads to the dramatic decrease in molecular weights. The occurrence of degradation was confirmed by GPC analysis of molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Chloroform accelerated the degradation reaction, possibly through the generation of hydrochloric acid. The degraded products were isolated and analyzed by GPC and NMR. A free radical mechanism was proposed for the oxidative degradation of epoxidized polyenes after excessive reaction.

Notizen: The rates of epoxidation of polybutadiene homopolymers and styrene-butadiene triblock copolymers with monoperoxyphthalic acid were measured at four temperatures in homogeneous solution. Dioxane and mixed solvents with chloroform were used as reaction media. Activation energy values were also calculated for polymers different in microstructure and styrene content. Viscometry in a modified viscometer was performed and combined with kinetic measurement to monitor the conformational change during epoxidation. Cis-content in polybutadiene and styrene content in SBS exhibit only slight effect on epoxidation in dioxane. The addition of chloroform promotes the reaction rate remarkably and enlarges the difference between polymers. Explanations were given including the solvent effect on reduced viscosity, which was used to correlate the conformational change of polymer chains. NMR and GPC analysis confirmed the absence of ring opening and degradation during epoxidation up to 54% epoxy group content.

Notizen: In this study, a radiation-induced copolymer, namely, polyethylene-g-acrylic acid and EVA-g-acrylic acid, in the form of a membrane, particulate, or tube was used as a substrate. The carboxyl groups of the grafted acrylic chains were oxidized into peracids. Optimal conditions for the oxidation, including the catalyst, reaction time, and temperature were investigated. Novel bigraft copolymers were then synthesized from the grafted polymeric peracid. A third component (e.g., 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) was grafted through the decomposition of peracid groups. Abnormality in morphology of the acrylic acid grafted and HEMA bigraft membrane was investigated by SEM and TEM observation, which showed the levelling effect of the third component and manifested a third circular domain generated inside the membrane at high degree of grafting.

Notizen: Differential scanning calorimetry was used to trace the heat of decomposition of the peracid groups (ΔHd) in the oxidized EVA-g-AA resin. From the correlation between ΔHd and the oxidation capacity measured by iodometry, it was found that 35 ± 5 cal of energy evolved per miliequivalent of peracid group decomposed. The ΔHd values are also useful in finding the optimum condition for oxidation of acid groups and can be used to investigate the distribution of active peracid groups across the matrix. The stability and the activation energy of decomposition of grafted type peracid resin were also studied, where the activation energy of decomposition was calculated to be 13.4 kcal/mol.

Notizen: The morphological and dynamic properties of epoxidized styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymers were studied and compared with their parent styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS). Two peaks were observed in the mechanical loss (tan δ) curve which can be attributed to segmental motion of epoxidized polybutadiene (EPPB) and polystyrene. Analysis by DSC thermograms also showed the linear increase of glass transition temperature for EPPB domain with the epoxy group content. Phase separated structures of epoxidized SBS as observed by TEM suggests a considerable degree of mixing occurred between phases after 80 mol % of the double bonds in SBS were epoxidized. The interfacial region displays a third peak and causes much steeper drop in modulus at higher temperature than Tg of EPPB. Parallel dielectric relaxation measurements were also made in the frequency range of 30 Hz-1 KHz as a function of temperature. In each dielectric constant (∊′) curve, there is a maximum near the Tg of EPPB determined from the dielectric loss tangent curve. The shift in Tg of EPPB versus epoxy group content was consistent with that measured by the thermal and dynamic mechanic analysis. These findings indicated an 8°C shift in glass transition temperature as the epoxy group content in EPPB increased 10%.

Notizen: The method of preirradiation grafting of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid onto polyethylene films was studied. The trapped radicals and hydroperoxides or diperoxides appeared to be able to induce graft polymerization. Mohr's salt was added to depress homopolymerization. The influences of crystallinity, dosage, and storage period on the grafting behavior were investigated from the viewpoint of practical application. At elevated temperature, the degree of grafting increased rapidly with reaction time initially, and then leveled off to the value of final percent grafting. Dosage and storage periods had greater extent of influence on the final percent grafting of LDPE than on that of HDPE. Electrical properties, transport properties, and mechanical properties were measured to compare the differences between acrylic-acid-and methacrylic-acid-grafted copolymer films. It was found that the properties of methacrylic-acid-grafted copolymer film was superior to those of acrylic-acid-grafted copolymer film, especially in electrical conductivity. The KOH diffusion test confirmed that grafting occurred not only on the surface but also in the interior of the polymer matrix, and the grafting is believed to proceed from the surface to the interior of the matrix.
