Notes: An accelerated formation of REBa2Cu4O8+δ (RE=Y and Dy) was observed as a suitable amount of nitric acid was added. This provides an excellent route for preparing high- purity REBa2Cu4O8+δ in ∼ 30 h. X-ray diffraction and thermal analyses (TGA/DTA) were conducted to reveal the formation mechanism. The addition of nitric acid did not change the reaction routes but formed more Ba2Cu3O5 which might play an important role for the formation of REBa2Cu4O8+δ. Magnetization data confirmed the Tc's of 80 and 75 K for as-prepared Y-124 and Dy-124, respectively.

Notes: Because of the mixed metal valance state of thallium in a Tl-based superconductor, a nearly single "1223'' phase can be readily prepared by a modified Pechini method (US Patent 3 330 697). Tl2O3 and other metal nitrates are dissolved in an aqueous solution plus a certain amount of oxalic acid for chelating the metal cations. The desired phase shows zero resistance at 114 K and the phase purity is identified by x-ray diffraction. Characteristics of superconductivity also are evidenced by the Meissner effect. The preparation technique is considered valuable to purify multiphase superconductors for mass production.

Notes: Bulk superconductivity with Tc (zero) up to 95 K in a Tl0.5Pb0.5Ca0.9Ce0.1Sr2Cu2 oxide with an Y1Ba2Cu3Oy -like structure was observed. Single-phase samples, tetragonal in structure with a=0.380±0.001, c=1.195±0.001 nm, and of P4/mmm space group, were prepared. The results represent the first case where Ce substitution significantly raised the Tc of a known compound. The samples were remarkably homogeneous both in composition and structure. The compounds were highly reproducible and stable. The preparative conditions were found to be much less stringent than those of other copper-based high Tc superconductors.

Notes: The crystal structure and superconducting properties of the Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system with Ca- and Cu-rich nominal composition were investigated. A nearly single-phased 110 K high Tc superconductor can be obtained with 852 °C/20 h sintering from the starting composition of Bi1.7Pb0.4Sr1.6Ca2.4Cu3.6Oy. X-ray diffraction patterns, resistivity measurement, diamagnetic susceptibility results, and scanning electron micrographs all indicate that the Ca- and Cu-rich nominal composition would result in better superconducting properties than those of Ca:Sr=1:1 Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O compounds in a much shorter sintering time.

Notes: The growth and characterization of Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films on single-crystal (001)MgO substrates by rf magnetron sputtering with a single target are reported. The comparison of different post-annealing conditions revealed that the film annealed under controlled Pb potential gave best superconducting properties with Tc0 above 105 K. The proper doping of Pb not only accelerated the formation of the high-Tc phase, but also improved the connectivity of high-Tc grains.

Notes: Bulk samples containing nearly single phase of the three Cu-O layered compound in the Tl-Pb(Bi)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system have been readily synthesized. By partially substituting Ca for Sr, an accelerated formation of the desired three Cu-O layered phase was observed when the Ca/Sr ratio reached up to 2.4/1.6. The phase purity was clearly evidenced by x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurement. The synthesis is valuable for further application interests.

Notes: Abstract A new process of electrodeposition in saturated cupric sulphate aqueous solution was successfully developed for the formation of copper film on a high-Tc, three Cu-O layered Tl-(Bi, Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor substrate surface for the first time. Scanning electron microscopy and electron micro-probe analysis were used to investigate the morphology of the substrate surface and the composition of the copper superconductor interface. After the electrodeposition process, no evident changes in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity were found by four-point probe measurement. The difference of magnetic properties before and after electrodeposition was investigated from magnetization measurements. Almost no degradation of the bulk properties was observed from the susceptibility data. The copper-superconductor contact was confirmed to show Ohmic behaviour by two-pointI–V characterization at liquid nitrogen boiling temperature.

Notes: Abstract High permeability ring-shaped mu metal sheets have been used to enhance magnetic fields in the bore of Bi-based high-T c superconducting coils. The central magnetic fieldB 0, generated by pancake coils placed between mu metal sheets, was measured at liquid nitrogen temperature 77 K. The increasing rate (IR) of the central magnetic fieldB 0 for single pancake coils was from 15 to 63% by using a 0.1 mm thick mu metal sheet. IR was decreased when the originalB 0 value increased. The thickness of mu metal sheets also affected IR. It was found that IR increased as the number of mu metal sheets was increased. In a test double-pancake coil IR reached 101%,B 0 was enhanced from 902 to 1815 G, when the total thickness of mu metal sheets on the top and bottom surface of the coil was 2.0 mm. These results indicate that the well-designed high-permeability materials can significantly enhance the magnetic fields generated by high-T c superconducting coils and magnets.

Notes: Yeast nucleoproteins were chemically phosphorylated with phosphorus oxychloride (POCL3). Studies using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, stability to pH and lysine estimation all indicated that the ∊-amino group of lysine was the principal functional group phosphorylated. Phosphorylation of ca. 30% of the lysine residues resulted in removal of more than 85% of contaminant ribonucleic acid from protein precipitated at pH 4.2. Phosphorylation did not alter the amino acid composition of yeast proteins and was reversible under acidic conditions. Based on the data, a method for the preparation of phosphorylated yeast protein with low levels of nucleic acid is proposed.
