Notizen: Summary In this study metal-conjugated concanavalin A (Con A) andBandieraea simplicifolia isolectin II (BSA II) have been applied to sections from kidneys of controls rats and rats which had untreated diabetes for 70 days or for 200 days. Lectin binding was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis of ferritin-iron or hemocyanin-copper. Con A binding increased significantly with diabetes; was totally blocked by alpha-D-mannoside; was not inhibited by fructose lysine; and was enhanced by NaHB4 preincubation. BSA II binding also increased significantly with diabetes.

Notizen: Summary The purpose of this study was to measure the binding of concanavalin A (conA) in minute regions of tissue by labelling the conA with iron dextran; then by measuring the bound iron per site by a procedure which uses atomic absorption spectrophotometry, X-ray microanalysis, and image analysis. The resulting data for a given region γ are entered into the formula: $${\text{iron at }}\gamma {\text{ = }}\left( {\frac{{{\text{Fe K}}\alpha {\text{X - rays from }}\gamma }}{\begin{gathered} {\text{Sum of Fe K}}\alpha {\text{ x - rays}} \hfill \\ {\text{ from all regions}} \hfill \\ \end{gathered} }} \right) \left( {\frac{{{\text{Area of }}\gamma }}{\begin{gathered} {\text{Sum of all}} \hfill \\ {\text{ areas}} \hfill \\ \end{gathered} }} \right) \left( \begin{gathered} {\text{Total iron}} \hfill \\ {\text{in section}} \hfill \\ \end{gathered} \right)$$ The resulting quantity “iron at γ” is directly proportional to conA binding in that region. For this study, three regions of rat renal cortex were compared: (1) distal tubules, collecting ducts and blood vessels; (2) glomeruli; and (3) proximal tubules. Regional iron concentrations were: (1) Combined region (distal tubules, etc.), 0.147±0.107 μg/mg tissue; (2) glomeruli, 0.199±0.087 μg/mg tissue; and (3) proximal tubules, 1.711±0.303 μg/mg tissue.

Notizen: Sodium sulfonated polypropylenes have been prepared by the slurry chlorosulfonation of polypropylene or propylene - ethylene copolymer followed by hot aqueous sodium hydroxide treatment. Low levels of excess sodium hydroxide were added to the materials to stabilize them against thermal decomposition. It was found that there was a strong interaction between the sodium hydroxide phase and the polymer sodium sulfonate groups which persisted above the nominal melting point of crystalline polypropylene. Evidence for the interaction includes an increased melt viscosity and a greatly increased nucleation rate for the composites as compared to the polypropylene sodium sulfonates not containing the sodium hydroxide phase. The composites have an improved balance of mechanical properties as compared to the materials from which they are prepared.

Notizen: The properties of stereoregular polypropylene have been modified by the introduction of controlled branching into the polymer chain backbone. Branching is achieved by copolymerizing propylene with certain long-chain 1-olefins by using a standard Ziegler Natta low pressure catalyst. Physical and mechanical properties of the copolymers are related to the degree and length of branching. It was found that ultimate strength properties of moderate molecular weight polymers could be improved at some expense in short-range deformation properties by adjusting the degree of branching to a suitable level. The copolymers did not show a good combination of low temperature brittleness characteristics along with higher temperature strength properties. It is suggested that the branching technique described will allow the tailoring of polypropylene resins for specific end use applications.

Notizen: The reactivities of polystyryl, polymethyl methacrylyl and polyacrylonitryl radicals with thirteen organometallic substrates were measured and correlated at 60°C. The organometallics chosen were saturated, aliphatic derivatives of elements from Groups 2b, 3a, 4a, and 5a of the Periodic Table. Correlation was accomplished by the method proposed by Bamford, Jenkins, and Johnston. The correlation based on the above three monomers allowed the prediction of the chain transfer constant C of four of the tested substrates with an untested radical, the polymethyl acrylyl, with an accuracy of better than 101. Since the correlation was based on absolute values of C which covered the range of 106 and which were accurate to within 100.8, it was concluded that the correlation was a valid one and was useful for predictive purposes. Values of C for untested substrates can be predicted with only a low order of accuracy because data are not available on the polarizability of most compounds. The introduction of oxygen into the vicinity of the metal-carbon bond reduces the values of C drastically and confirms that C is very sensitive to polar factors. There appears to be a correlation between β (the polarizability of the substrate) and β (the intrinsic reactivity of the substrate) within a given group of the Periodic Table. The fact that there is not a general correlation between α and α for the whole Periodic Table suggests that the mechanism of the transfer reaction is different from group to group.
