Notes: Abstract  The new traceability system of measurement standards based on the Japanese Measurement Law has been established since November 1993. Some reference materials such as metal standard solutions, pH standard solutions and standard gas mixtures are included in the system together with relevant physical quantities. In this system, primary measurement standard instruments or primary reference materials are designated by the regulation for each quantity. For the practical dissemination of each quantity, accreditation of calibration bodies is recognized by the steering committee under the supervision of the government. In the course of assessment of a candidate calibration body, the concepts of ISO/IEC Guide 25 and ISO/IEC Guide 58 are effectively introduced. For the estimation of reliability, the concept of how to introduce the statistical approach is effectively considered. The method of uncertainty evaluation described in the ISO document entitled "Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement" is adopted.

Notes: Abstract  In the field of reference materials, COMAR (Code d'Indexation des Matériaux de Référence) is now internationally known as a reliable directory. In order to improve the quality of COMAR, a document which covers general requirements for the registration of reference material has recently been adopted by the Japanese coding centre, NITE. This paper describes the general requirements for reference materials and the current status of the COMAR database coded by the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE), Japan. The concept of the requirements is fundamentally based on the ISO Guides 30, 31, 33, 34 and 35. Certifications of reference materials are divided into the following three categories in the newly adopted document. 1. Certifications based on the results of interlaboratory comparisons 2. Certifications in accordance with the Measurement Law 3. Certifications in accordance with the measurement results of national institutions An example of an uncertainty evaluation is also presented in the paper.

Notes: Summary Action potentials of inhibitory burst neurons (IBNs) were extracellularly recorded in the pontomedullary reticular formation in the cat. These neurons were identified by their burst activity coincident with the quick inhibitory phase of the contralateral abducens nerve during vestibular nystagmus and by their antidromic activation from the contralateral abducens nucleus. During extracellular recording from the soma of single IBNs, another electrode for microstimulation was systematically tracked throughout the brain stem. For each IBN investigated, the effective sites for antidromic activation were invariably found in the contralateral abducens, prepositus hypoglossi, medial vestibular nuclei and the area ventral to the prepositus hypoglossi nucleus. Stimulation of neither the ipsilateral brain stem nor the oculomotor nuclei evoked antidromic responses in IBNs. Extracellular spikes of single IBNs and neurons in the overlying projection area were recorded simultaneously. Their correlation was examined by using peri-spike time histograms. Shortly after the spikes of single IBNs, the activity of motoneurons and internuclear interneurons in the abducens nucleus, and of type II neurons in the prepositus hypoglossi and vestibular nuclei, was depressed. Connections of IBNs with ipsilateral medial rectus motoneurons were studied by spike-triggered averaging of membrane potentials of the motoneurons and action potentials of the medial rectus nerve. Single IBN spikes induced a di- or polysynaptic disfacilitation in the motoneurons. This disfacilitation was concluded to be mediated by some of the above-described interneurons which were directly inhibited by IBNs. Their depressant effect on medial rectus motoneuronal spike activity was comparable to that on the spike activity of contralateral abducens motoneurons.

Notes: Summary Afferents of the cortical pupillo-constrictor areas (PCAs) of the cat were studied using the horseradish peroxidase method. PCAs receive heavy cortical inputs from areas 7, 19, 21, the lateral suprasylvian area, the splenial visual area, and subcortically from the claustrum, the intralaminar nuclei, the pulvinar-lateral posterior nuclear complex.

Notes: Summary Current hypotheses regarding Alzheimer's disease implicate cholinergic function. In this study, peripheral cholinergic neurons in the vagal nodosal ganglion were transplanted into the brains of Alzheimer model rats. Eighteen Sprague-Dalwey strain rats were divided into three groups: 1) unoperated control rats, 2) rats that had undergone bilateral destruction of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) (Alzheimer model), and 3) the transplantation group in which the vagal nodosal ganglion was transplanted into the cerebral neocortex one week after the bilateral destruction of the Meynert nucleus. Seven weeks after the transplantation rat behaviour was assessed using psychological tests (spontaneous activitiy, passive avoidance response and the Hebb-Williams maze test). The Alzheimer model rats had a statistically significant increase in spontaneous activity in comparison with controls (P〈0.01). The transplant rats showed some amelioration of this abnormal increase in spontaneous activity observed in the Alzheimer model rats. All of the control rats showed conditioned passive avoidance responses, while only one Alzheimer model rat retained is shocked-conditions behaviour before 24 hours (P〈0.01). Three of the six transplanted rats showed complete improvement in the passive avoidance response test. In the Hebb-Williams maze test, the rats with NMB lesions made more errors than the control rats. The transplanted rats had a lower number of errors than NBM-lesioned rats but still more than the controls. Histological examination revealed many cholinergic cells in the transplanted tissue, especially in the area adjacent to the cerebral cortical surface. The present results indicate that autotransplantation of peripheral cholinergic cells ameliorates abnormal behaviour in Alzheimer model rats.

Notes: Abstract The three-dimensional elastic problems in finite deformations are not known to have been analyzed by the usual stress function and displacement function. By applying Hasegava's presentation and Adkins perturbation method, we propose a new analytical method for three-dimensional elastic problems for compressible materials and incompressible materials, using the displacement function for axisymmetrical elastic problems in finite deformations with surface force or body force. Further, this analytical method is examined by two simple examples.
