    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird eine numerische Untersuchung über das nichtstationäre Verhalten eines senkrechten, rechtwinkeligen Wärmespeichers vorgelegt, der aus einer Flüssigkeit und Feststoffkugeln besteht und an dessen einer senkrechten Wand konstante Wärmestromdichte herrscht, während die übrigen thermisch isoliert sind. Insbesondere wurde der Einfluß der Porosität, der Stromdichte der eintretenden Wärme, der Stoffgrößen und des Höhen-Breiten-Verhältnisses des Speichers untersucht. Es wurde gefunden, daß die freie Konvektion einen starken Einfluß auf das Verhalten des Speichers hat, indem sie die Zeit bis zu einem quasistationären Zustand nach Heizbeginn abkürzt und den porösen Speicher thermisch homogenisiert. Die Ergebnisse gestatten es, wahlweise die Zeit bis zum quasistationären Zustand und die gespeicherte oder entnommene Wärmemenge eines vorgeschlagenen Speichers zu bestimmen, indem man eine geeignete Kombination beider Phasen und der Abmaße des Speichers im Vergleich zum Einphasenspeicher auswählt.
    Notes: Abstract A fundamental study on the transient characteristics of a vertical rectangular porous heat storage, which was composed of a fluid (liquid) and spherical solid particles, has been numerically carried out under one vertical wall exposed to a constantheat-flux condition while other walls thermally insulated. The present study has clarified the effects of the porosity, the heatflux as a receiving heat, thermophysical properties and the dimensions of the heat storage (aspect-ratioH/W, height to width of the rectangular cavity) on the transient characteristics of the porous heat storage proposed. It was concluded that the natural convection occurred in the heat storage had an important role in evaluating the transient heat transfer characteristics, that is, the convection occurred had contributed to shortening the time period until the quasi-steady state after starting the heating to the heat storage and to homogenizing thermally the porous heat storage. From the results obtained, it is possible to obtain optionally the time period until the quasi-steady state and the amount of the heat stored into or taken out from the porous heat storage proposed by selecting the proper combination of both phases and the dimension of the storage, in comparison with the single phase heat storage.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurde der Druckanstieg bei Einfrieren eines in Rohren eingeschlossenen Wassers experimentell und mittels theoretischer Berechnungen bei unterschiedlichen Werten von Wärmübergang und Umgebungstemperatur und unter Berücksichtigung der Verformung der Rohrwand berechnet. Dabei konnte festgestellt werden, daß das vorgestellte Modell die tatsächlichen Phänomene gut wiedergibt und die vorgeschlagenen dimensionslosen Parameter für die Berechnung des Druckanstieges und die Berücksichtigung der Wärmeübergangsbedingungen geeignet sind. Die Tangentialspannung wurde in dimensionsloser Form analysiert, um die Abhängigkeit von der modifizierten Biot-Zahl und von dem Verhältnis von Wandstärke zu Radius des Rohres zu klären. Es wird auch gezeigt, daß die kritische modifizierte Fourier-Zahl beträchtlich erhöht werden kann, wenn man eine Gaszone im Zentrum des Rohres einführt. Weiterhin wird gezeigt, daß das Kriterium für den Einfrierbruch des Rohres als Kombination dimensionsloser Parameter ausgedrückt werden kann.
    Notes: Abstract The pressure rise due to freezing of water enclosed in pipes has been studied, by means of theoretical computation and experiments, under the various heat transfer conditions and ambient temperatures, taking deformation of pipe walls into account. It has been found that the presented models well represent the actual phenomena and dimensionless parameters proposed are effective for correlating the pressure rises, the conditions of heat transfer, dimensions of the pipes. The tangential stress has been analyzed in dimensionless form to clarify its dependabilities on the modified Biot number and the ratio of thickness of a pipe wall and its radius. It has also shown thatF crit, the critical Fourier number, can be considerably increased by introducing a void area at the center of pipes and the criterion of freezing fracture of pipes can be expressed as a combination of the dimensionless parameters presented in the report.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a new application of optical heterodyne detection using a laser beam for two-dimensional imaging of the internal structure of strongly scattering media in which the structure is completely obstructed from normal visual observation. The directional resolution capability for image formation due to the excellent antenna properties of the heterodyne technique is verified experimentally using a ground glass to cause strong scattering of the signal beam. Successful image detection of a test target placed in a highly scattering absorptive medium, with spatial resolution better than 400 μm in the case of our experiments, demonstrates that this Coherent Detection Imaging (CDI) method can overcome the diffuse nature of images in media such as those of biomedical interest and others to achieve scanning and tomographic imaging.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports a successful achievement of laser-induced biological cell fusion using an excimer laser excited dye laser. To our knowledge, we examined for the first time the dependence of fusion rate on laser pulse energy, number of laser pulses, and laser wavelength.     Notes: Abstract The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of FK613, a novel indolyl piperidine derivative, were investigated after oral administrations of 5, 10 and 20 mg in hard gelatin capsules to healthy male volunteers. FK613 was rapidly and almost completely absorbed, and 〉89% was recovered in the urine as the unchanged form. The urinary excretion of FK613 was linearly correlated with plasma concentration and its low water solubility was the main concern regarding the safety. In another experiment using a double-blind crossover design, in which 0 (placebo), 5 and 20 mg FK613 were administered to determine the plasma concentration-effect relationship, suppression of the intradermal histamine-induced skin reaction by FK613 was observed. Thus, the maintenance of a plasma concentration of FK613 in the range of 80–250 ng · ml-1 was recommended to ensure the suppression of histamine-induced wheal by 〉50% and not to exceed the solubility in urine. To achieve this, a new hydrogel-type formulation of FK613 was developed, with the aim both of delaying its absorption, so as to suppress the sharp rise in plasma concentration, and of maintaining the effective concentration for a longer period of time. This formulation was administered after meals at the doses of 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 mg, and at repeated doses of 40 mg twice daily for 6.5 days to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and safety in healthy subjects. The area under the plasma concentration curve increased linearly with dose, whereas maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) tended to peak as dose increased, indicating the desirable properties of this formulation. Although Cmax exceeded 250 ng/ml at doses of 30 mg or more, no urinary crystal formation was observed on careful inspection of urine.

    Notes: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the oxidative deterioration of oils and foods by using the single photoelectron counting system, which was designed for the measurement of ultraweak chemiluminescence. Thermally oxidized soybean oils were prepared and their chemical characteristics and chemiluminescence were measured. The results showed that the increase of emission intensity was closely correlated to the oxidative deterioration of oils, instant Chinese noodles and milk powder. This new method has a great advantage in measuring the quality of food in a short period of time by a nonexpert without any prior treatment.
