Notes: Elderberry is shown to be a good source of anthocyanins (Acy), having between 2–10 mg Acylg berry. Anthocyanin concentration is very dependent on variety and maturity. Pressing of the berries gives a significant difference between weight distribution (pomace = 25–40% of total weight) and anthocyanin distribution (Acy in pomace = 75–98% of total Acy). Freezing of the berries prior to pressing gives much less pomace weight, with only a small reduction of anthocyanin distribution in the pomace. Tests of various extraction media (HCl acidified alcohols, aqueous HC1 and aqueous citfic acid) showed the highest anthocyanin recovery for aqueous HCl(0.1 M). Multiple extraction tests show that most of the anthocyanin is extracted from the pomace within two to three steps. The influence of extraction time and extraction temperature is discussed.

Notes: Fifty-three of 114 uncalibrated scavenging systems with open reservoirs had evacuation rates of less than 20 litres/minute. Analysis showed that there was no correlation between the number of hours in use since the date of the last service and the demonstrated change in effectiveness. Calibrated systems which can be continuously monitored have definite advantages.

Notes: Results on e+ transmission reemission properties are presented for three single-crystal W(100) films of thicknesses 1000, 2000, and 3100 A(ring) for incident e+ energies of 1.4–16 keV. The films were first cleaned with a 10-s laser pulse, then annealed in O2 (10−6 Torr), and finally heated in a vacuum (10−9 Torr). Thereafter the films showed good reemission properties. The maximum transmitted yields of slow e+ were 38% (1000 A(ring)), 27% (2000 A(ring)), and 17% (3100 A(ring)) at incident e+ energies of 4, 5.2, and 7.2 keV, respectively. The energy distributions of the reemitted e+ were characterized by a full width half maximum of 0.15–0.2 eV located at 2.8 eV containing 60%–70% of the e+ superimposed onto a nearly uniform distribution covering the energy interval 0–2.8 eV.

Notes: The spectral density functions J1(ω0) and J2(2ω0) have been determined for CDCl3 dissolved in mixtures of N-(4-ethoxybenzylidene)-4'-n-butylaniline (EBBA) and Merck's licristal ZLI 1167 of various compositions. The measurements have been performed by use of the Jeener–Broekaert pulse sequence at 9.2 and 46.0 MHz. The nematic director is parallel to the direction of the magnetic field at high content of EBBA in the mixture and perpendicular at low content. The molecular dynamic has been studied at the transition point between these two directions. It has been shown that contributions exclusively from molecular rotational diffusion motions and small angle director fluctuations cannot sufficiently account for all the experimental observations.

Notes: Primary, flat carcinoma in situ of the urinary bladder is rare and its behaviour is unpredictable. The aim of this retrospective study was to obtain base-line data and investigate the prognostic value of unbiased, stereological estimates of the volume-weighted mean nuclear volume, nuclear Vv, in 78 bladder biopsies from 22 patients with primary flat carcinoma in situ (Bergkvist grades III-IV). On average, nuclear Vv was 77 μm3 in nine biopsies with morphologically normal urothelium, 292 μm3 in 56 isolated primary lesions and 266 μm3 in lesions of luminal urothelium in 13 biopsies with co-existing invasive carcinoma. No recognizable developmental pattern of nuclear Vv in relation to the time course of disease was found. Nuclear volume in the first biopsy was of the same magnitude in lesions with and without co-existing invasive carcinoma (2P=0.55), and in lesions with short and long duration of invasion-free period (2P 〈 0.20). Nuclear Vv in the first biopsy did not differ between patients who survived and those who died from their primary flat carcinoma in situ (2P=0.07). Dividing the patients on the basis of the group median of the first biopsy showing flat carcinoma in situ (nuclear Vv= 261 μm3), the survival was the same in patients with nuclear Vv above and below the cut-off point (2P=0.16). However, the survival curves showed a tendency to differ in the first 2-8 years of observation. Stereological estimates of nuclear Vv provide objective, quantitative information, but their prognostic value in patients with primary flat carcinoma in situ of the bladder needs further clarification in larger data bases.

Notes: The purple-hinge rock scallop (Hinnites multirugosus), is being considered a new candidate for marine aquaculture. Adductor muscle was analyzed for its sensory characteristics and compared with commercially available scallops. Three different groups of rock scallops, one undernourished with bland flavor, were analyzed for fatty acids and carbohydrates. The rock scallop rated very high in flavor and aroma profiles in comparison to Thailand, Nova Scotia, and various Atlantic Coast scallops. It lacked a fishy aroma in contrast to all other brands tested and had a clean shellfish, sweet, and buttery aftertaste. Despite flavor differences, total lipid and fatty acids did not differ significantly in the three populations analyzed. Lipid comprised 2% (as percent dry weight) of the adductor muscle. Principal fatty acids are 16:1, 18:2, 18:3, 20:1 and 20:s; 93–96% of the fatty acids are unsaturated. Rock scallops experimentally starved for 2 months had a bland flavor and had lower monosaccharides (0.292–0.511 μmoles monosaccharide per mg protein) and glycogen compared to rock scallops with normal flavor (1.047–1.739 μmoles monosaccharide per mg protein). Starved scallops also had lower individual monosaccharides (0.121–0.217 μmoles glucose per my protein) compared to normal flavor scallops (0.527–1.339 μmoles glucose per my protein). The principal monosaccharides identified include fucose, mannose, glucose, galactosamine, glucosamine, and sialic acid, all of which are quantitatively lower in bland flavor scallops. Glucose is bound as glycogen.
