Notes: The concentrations of 27 trace elements in the basalt BIR-1, as well as in other mafic rock reference materials, have been determined by ICP-MS, using pure elemental solutions for external calibration and standard additions. Concentrations of rare earth elements in BIR-1 for the new ICP-MS data, agree with compiled values, and previous ID-SSMS results, whereas ICP-MS data on HFSE's are systematically higher by about 40% to 70% than ID-SSMS, but are consistent with data generated at other ICP-MS laboratories.

Notes: We report thick superconducting films of Y-Ba-Cu-O on oxidized silicon substrates. The critical temperatures for onset and zero resistance are 96 and 77 K, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis predicts 1, 2, 3 composition and orthorhombic phase of the film.

Notes: Abstract The effect of temperatures and exogenous supply of different carbon and nitrogen sources on the conidial germination and appresoria formation inC. capsici has been studied. 25 °C was observed to be the best temperature for conidial germination. At 18 °C, conidia germinated only in hanging drops and did not germinate on 2 % agar. Amongst carbon sources, 1-rhamnose supported maximum conidial germination and appresoria formation. Potassium nitrate supported very good conidial germination and appresoria formation. Ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and ammonium chloride were found to be inhibitory. A few aminoacids stimulated conidial germination but dl-alanine, dl-methionine, tyrosine and l-glutamine were found to be inhibitory.

Notes: Abstract A time-parallel simulation obtains parallelism by partitioning the time domain of the simulation. An approximate time-parallel simulation algorithm named GG1K is developed for acyclic networks of loss FCFSG/G/1/K queues. The GG1K algorithm requires two phases. In the first phase, a similar system (i.e. aG/G/1/∞ queue) is simulated using the GLM algorithm. Then the resultant trajectory is transformed into an approximateG/G/1/K trajectory in the second phase. The closeness of the approximation is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Our results show that the approximation is highly accurate except whenK is very small (e.g. 5) in certain models. The algorithm exploits unbounded parallelism and can achieve near-linear speedup when the number of arrivals simulated is sufficiently large.

Notes: Abstract Queueing theorists have presented, as solutions to many queueing models, probability generating functions in which state probabilities are expressed as functions of the roots of characteristic equations, evaluation of the roots in particular cases being left to the reader. Many users have complained that such solutions are inadequate. Some queueing theorists, in particular Neuts [6], rather than use Rouché's theorem to count roots and an equation-solver to find them, have developed new algorithms to solve queueing problems numerically, without explicit calculation of roots. Powell [7] has shown that in many bulk service queues arising in transportation models, characteristic equations can be solved and state probabilities can be found without serious difficulty, even when the number of roots to be found is large. We have slightly modified Powell's method, and have extended his work to cover a number of bulk-service queues discussed by Chaudhry et al. [1] and a number of bulk-arrival queues discussed in the present paper.

Notes: Abstract Fire losses due to cable fire in thermal power plants and industrial units are mounting. Fire in cable galleries is caused either by an external source or internal heating due to overloading or poor cable insulation. Most of the power cables are laid in groups that run on trays. In the event of fire, cable insulation melts and cable conductors come into contact and generate sparks. The resulting flame spreads through cables and engulf other groups of cables. This leads to damage in control rooms and distribution units that causes power generation disruption and plant shutdown. To minimize the damage and system disturbance due to fire, a new system for cable installation has been developed. The system involves construction of fire stop walls using fire-resistant cavity blocks, heat-resistant wool, and fire-resistant sealant.
