Notes: In the last decade there has been increasing interest in empirically supported treatments for children. Chorpita et al. present an attempt to synthesize the knowledge base in the field and implementation of services. Placing the results in context, the authors make clear the need for an increased awareness of culture by researchers interested in empirically supported treatments. The construct of culture is explored as an active participant in the outcome literature. Furthermore, reasons for the lack of research into culture's influence on treatment outcomes is considered. Lastly, the importance of maintaining a dialog between the scientific and clinical service community is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Examined the outcome of a 16-week play group therapy intervention for six highly stressed preschool-aged children compared to a preschool-aged control group. The focus of the group was to help the children build social skills, learn to express emotions appropriately, increase understanding of stress events, and learn new coping skills. The results indicated a significant increase in anxious and externalizing behaviors during the course of the intervention for the treatment group subjects compared to controls. Furthermore, group treatment subjects also indicated a significant increase in social skills during the group intervention. However, there were no significant differences on the psycho-social measure from pre-test to post-test. Despite the lack of differences on quantitative measures of children's functioning, parent report on a qualitative measure indicated improvement in children's psycho-social functioning at the end of treatment. Implications of the play therapy group approach for children exposed to major stressors are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Examined the differences in the perception of control in 67 school-age children with externalizing and children with both externalizing and internalizing behavior problems. The results indicated that children with externalizing behavior and mixed behavior could be differentiated by their perception of control. Specifically, children with externalizing behavior endorsed a significantly stronger unknown locus of control than children in the mixed behavior group. Findings suggest that when behavior groups are clearly defined, neither external nor internal locus of control is the dominant style. Implications for the findings are discussed.
