Notes: The focal point of a laser beam inside a liquid-helium cryostat has been spatially stabilized. Both passive and active stabilization techniques are employed. The position of the focal point is maintained to submicrometer dimensions in the plane transverse to the beam path. The instabilities along the beam propagation direction are reduced to the order of 10 μm.

Notes: We have developed an improved technique to increase the stability of single-frequency lasers by employing a scanning Fabry–Perot interferometer and a stabilized helium neon laser. Our instrument surpasses earlier devices in several key areas. The laser frequency can now be stabilized while scanned across its inherent single-frequency tuning range. The frequency stability is long term with an increased frequency correction rate of nearly 500 Hz. The laser frequency can be scanned repeatedly with a repetition accuracy equal to the frequency stability. Also, the electronics permit the laser frequency to be swept externally while synchronized with other instruments. Our stabilizer reduced the frequency drift of a commercial ring dye laser to ±1 MHz relative to the reference laser.

Notes: We have developed a circuit for maintaining a fixed phase relationship between two optical choppers. The basis of this circuit employs a phase-locked loop using both proportional and integral terms in the feedback control voltage. Using additional circuitry, the electronics can compensate for drifts in the phase as well as frequency of both choppers in the frequency range from 200 Hz to 3 kHz. These phased optical choppers have been used to block background light simultaneous with a chopped cw laser in experiments that measure long lived fluorescence.
