Adaptive optics were proposed as a solution to heat load problems generated by powerful x-ray beams of next generation synchrotron radiation sources. A first adaptive x-ray mirror prototype is presently under design at the ESRF. This device, which is optimized for a wiggler beamline, is described here. It is composed of three main subsystems: the mirror body, the correction feedback loop including the actuators for the mechanical correction, and the optical setup for inspecting the mirror shape.
