Description / Table of Contents: Contents The solution of network problems in power engineering is often simplified by the use of coordinate transformations. These transformations take advantage of the symmetrical properties of electrical equipment. All possible transformations are deduced in this paper. It is found that the well-known oαβ-(Clarke)-, odq-(Park)- and o12-(symmetrical)-coordinates have to be supplemented by certain oGH-coordinates to form a complete set of transformations. These oGH-coordinates generalize the concept of the complex vector as known in the literature. The proper choice of the coordinate system is essential for the efficient use of these transformations. Criteria for the proper choice are given.

Notes: Summary Postmortem scanning electron microscopy of human phalanges in a chronic uremic hemodialysis patient with hyperparathyroidism showed the presence of confluent abnormal rounded formations with a radial rosette-like crystalline pattern in the diaphysis as well as in the epiphyseal part of the bones. These fan-shaped configurations were found either as individual formations within bone trabeculae or as numerous aggregated crystalline deposits replacing large parts of the bone structure. The microdissected content of such large areas submitted to X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the predominant presence of calcium oxalate monohydrate or whewellite with some traces of hydroxyapatite. Oxalate titration analysis indicated the presence of 25% of oxalate, corresponding to 45% in weight of whewellite.

Notes: Abstract A patient with clearly developed features of the full Lesch-Nyhan syndrome and complete lack of activity of hypoxynthine-phosphoribosyl-transferase is described. The clinical picture was characterized by absence of spasticity, good control of autoaggression by behavior therapy, and no signs of renal insufficiency. After death, which was caused by a viral infection, pathological examination and a search for material immunologically crossreacting with hypoxanthine-phosphoribosyltransferase were possible. In spite of increased serum urate levels and raised urinary uric acid excretion there were no signs of urate deposits or damage in the internal organs, including the kidneys. Crossreactive material was found in the liver, kidneys and spleen, a relatively rare finding in the full Lesch-Nyhan-syndrome. The absence of any specific pathological changes in the brain of this patient is in agreement with earlier reports.

Notes: Summary To evaluate the potential therapeutic value of calcium antagonists in hypertension associated with impaired renal function, blood pressure (BP), certain regulatory factors, and metabolic correlates of cardiovascular risk have been assessed in 15 patients with mild to marked chronic renal failure before and after 6 weeks of therapy with nitrendipine. Compared to placebo, nitrendipine (mean final dose 55 mg/day) decreased supine BP from 173/102 to 146/81 mm Hg and upright BP from 170/105 to 145/86 mm Hg. Heart rate, body weight (+0.8 kg) and exchangeable sodium (+176 mmol, not significant) were minimally increased, and plasma and whole blood volume, plasma angiotensin II and creatinine concentrations, and urinary electrolyte and creatinine excretion were not significantly changed. Nitrendipine increased uric acid excretion and lowered plasma uric acid by 24%; glucose, insulin, serum total lipids, and lipoprotein fractions were unchanged.

Notes: Six lucerne (Medicago sativa) genotypes (Beaver, Vernal and four other strains being developed at the University of Alberta) and five smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis) genotypes (Carlton, Magna and three genotypes being developed) were examined in terms of forage dry matter (DM) yield and degradability, as determined by the rate and amount of material which disappeared from bags suspended in the rumen of cattle. Dry matter yield did not differ (p 〉 0·05) between lucerne genotypes at first cut. The smooth bromegrass strain 517 had a proportionately Oil higher (P 〈 0·05) DM yield than did the Magna strain. No differences (P 〈 0·05) were detected within either smooth bromegrass or lucerne genotypes for 48 or 60 h in situ DM degradability. The 416E smooth bromegrass genotype, however, had a significantly higher (P 〈 0·05) rate of DM degradation in the rumen than the other genotypes and also exhibited a longer (P 〈 0·05) lag period before a significant amount of DM degradability occurred. In the in situ technique, approximately eighteen bags would have been needed to obtain DM degradability measurements with a confidence interval of 0·04 for DM degradability of a probability of 0·95. Further in vivo studies with the bromegrass genotypes are warranted to ascertain if the differences in digestion rates and lag times are related to meaningful differences in animal intake and digestibility.
