Summary Stationary spike-trains of preoptic neurons of the rat were submitted to a correlation- and spectral-analysis at normal temperature and after central warming and cooling. Correlograms and periodograms were computed which enable the elimination of stochastic signal components and the identification of the relevant periodic components. About one half of the analysed neurons showed periodic correlograms. The following three classes may be distinguished: Neurons which showed correlograms with periodicities at each applied thermal state, at only one or two thermal states and those with no recognizable periodicities at all. Relations between periodicity and the thermosensitivity of the neurons are discussed.
