Polyethylene terephthalate modified with suitable phosphorous compounds can be processed into fibres with permanent flame retardent properties. Copolyesters with chain units derived from 2-carboxyethyl-methyl-phosphinic acid are described in detail. The cyclic anhydride of this carboxyphosphinic acid, the 2-methyl-2,5-dioxo-1,2-oxaphospholane, is opened by ethylene glycol. The resulting mixture of phosphinic acid esters and carboxylic acid esters, which are in an equilibrium, is used for polycondensation. The flammability properties of textiles prepared from the modified fibres ( Trevira CS) are discussed.

Aus Polyethylenterephthalat, das mit geeigneten Phosphorverbindungen modifiziert ist, können permanent flammhemmende Polyesterfasern hergestellt werden. Copolyester mit Kettengliedern, die sich von der 2-Carboxyethyl-methyl-phosphinsäure ableiten, werden speziell beschrieben. Das cyclische Anhydrid dieser Carboxyphosphinsäure, das 2-Methyl-2,5-dioxo-1,2-oxaphospholan, geht bei der Ringöffnung durch Ethylenglykol in ein bei der Polykondensation verwendetes Gemisch von Phosphinsäure- und Carbonsäureestern über, die miteinander im Gleichgewicht stehen. Das Brennverhalten von textilen Artikeln aus den modifizierten Polyesterfasern (®Trevira = eingetragenes Warenzeichen der Hoechst AG. Trevira CS) wird diskutiert.
