Notizen: The measurement of the extremely small velocities that arise in several important heat transfer processes, such as those associated with natural and mixed convective flows, by means of a hot-wire anemometer is generally complicated because of the nonuniform temperature field that exists in these circumstances and because of the sensitivity of the anemometer output to the orientation of the wire sensor with respect to the flow. This article describes an apparatus to calibrate constant-temperature hot-wire anemometers for measurements in air, with variable ambient temperature, and for different orientations of the flow with respect to the sensor. The utility of the technique is demonstrated by calibrating an anemometer by this method and using it to measure the flow velocities in a particular natural convection circumstance.

Notizen: A theoretical study of the effect of an aligned, aiding, externally induced free stream on the buoyancy-induced flow adjacent to a vertical surface, on which isolated thermal sources are located, is carried out. The thermal sources are taken as long planar sources of finite height and the resulting two-dimensional flow is numerically studied. The nature and the basic characteristics of the mixed convection flow that arises are investigated. Of particular interest is the interaction of the wakes generated by the sources and the dependence of this interaction on the thermal energy input and the distance between the sources. The distance beyond which the two sources may be treated as independent is investigated. The governing parameters are varied over wide ranges and their effect on the flow and on the transport mechanisms is studied in detail. The flow over and heat transfer from a thermal source located in the wake of an upstream source are determined. The parametric range for which a boundary-layer treatment is satisfactory is determined by solving the full elliptic equations. Several other important features are obtained and considered in terms of the underlying mechanisms.

Notizen: Abstract The numerical modeling of the heat transfer and fluid flow processes in manufacturing, particularly in the thermal processing of materials, is discussed in this paper. Three important processes that are considered in detail are polymer extrusion, glass fiber drawing and casting. The governing equations, the relevant boundary conditions and the basic approach to numerically model many of these processes are presented. The importance of material characterization in an accurate mathematical and numerical modeling is brought out, along with the coupling between the process and the resulting properties. The various concerns and computational difficulties that arise due to the non-Newtonian behavior of plastics, exponential temperature dependence of glass viscosity, complex geometry, free surface flow, conjugate transport, material movement, and phase change are considered and some of the important methods to treat these are presented. A few characteristic numerical results are presented on these three important materials processing systems.

Notizen: Abstract The complexity of the design in thermal manufacturing processes stems from the need to simulate complicated heat transfer, fluid flow and phase change phenomena and couple the results with the design rules and knowledge available of these processes to obtain satisfactory designs. In this regard, the ability of expert systems to use heuristic reasoning has proved to be a powerful tool in the computer-aided-design of thermal manufacturing systems. In this paper, the salient features of a knowledge-based system developed for the design of the ingot casting process has been outlined. A Prolog-based decision-making front-end is interfaced with a Fortran-based computational engine for rapid design. The results from the heat transfer analysis, obtained from the computational module, are coupled to the evaluation module, which checks for satisfaction of the design critera and violation of the design constraints. The decision-making module uses a set of design rules to manipulate the variables until the design specifications are satisfied. Modularity and flexibility are maintained using an object-oriented format. Several interesting design acceleration features like design inheritance from simpler models and design extraction from previous designs are illustrated. The main features of this knowledge-based tool and the savings in time resulting from using these special features are discussed in detail.

Notizen: The numerical simulation of the heat transfer and fluid processes in a furnace is carried out using finite difference techniques. A heat treatment furnace for the annealing of steel is considered as an example and a mathematical model of the system is obtained by simplifying the equations that govern the transport in the various components that constitute the system. The resulting set of coupled equations then governs the time-dependent temperature distribution in the furnace. Because of the complexity of the full problem, the transport processes undergone by individual components of the furnace are simulated first, using appropriate boundary conditions that decouple them from the other components. These individual simulations are considered in terms of the underlying physical mechanisms for validation. Finally, these are combined to obtain the simulation of the full, coupled problem. The temperature cycle undergone by the material is computed, along with the time-dependent temperature distributions in other components. A comparison with experimental data indicates close agreement, lending strong support to the numerical model. The relevance of these results to the design of the overall thermal system is also outlined.

Notizen: In a plasticating screw extruder, a polymer melt forms in the melting zone of the extruder. Pressurization of the molten polymer takes place in the melting and the metering sections so that the melt can flow through the restricted passage of the die and assume a desired shape. In a melt fed extruder, the throughput is governed by the pressure rise over the entire length of the extruder. The pressure developed in the screw channel may also be employed in rapid filling of molds, such as those in injection molding. When the geometry of the screw, the barrel temperature, and the die are selected, a unique set of operating parameters arise for a particular flow rate or screw speed. In the present study, numerical and analytical methods are used to calculate the transport in the extruder and the pressure drop in the die. An iterative numerical method based on solving the equations of motion and energy in the screw channel and a correction scheme to couple the die with the screw channel is discussed. The numerical algorithm is capable of handling an arbitrary variation of the viscosity of the polymeric fluid with the shear rate and temperature. The results obtained by simulating the fluid flow in the screw channel are compared with available numerical and experimental results in the literature, indicating good agreement. The performance characteristics of the extruder, for chosen thermal boundary conditions and screw geometry, are presented for different die geometries and different fluids. The important considerations that arise in the numerical simulation of the extrusion process are also discussed.
