Notes: Abstract Problems in psychiatric adjustment were found to be more common in children and adolescents with chronic renal failure (22 subjects on hospital haemodialysis and 22 with less severe renal failure) than in healthy matched controls. There was a trend towards more definite and marked psychological difficulties in patients with more severe renal condition. However, the less severely physically ill children tended to have increased difficulties in school adjustment and they reported more feelings of loneliness. The findings have implications on the management of children with chronic renal failure.

Notes: A new efficient injection method from a laser ion source to a RFQ was proposed and is being tested in RIKEN (The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Japan). Laser plasma is induced just before the entrance of the RFQ and is injected directly into the RFQ channel. In order to understand this new scheme, a particle tracking simulation study, which focused on the entrance of the RFQ, has been started with three-dimensional (3D) space charge effect in a realistic 3D electric field map. According to the beam tracking calculation, the predicted currents are smaller than experimentally obtained values. To obtain better accuracy of the simulation, motion of electrons should be described adequately. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary We describe our impressions gained in the process of systematic interviewing of children with chronic renal failure. In spite of improved techniques of medical treatment in recent years, many of these children and their families remain under considerable strain. This is caused by anxieties about the child's general prospects for the future, problems in accepting the illness and treatment, particularly with a late onset of the condition, and multiple hospital admissions with occasional life-threatening incidents. In spite of their less serious nature, chronic features such as poor growth and urinary incontinence seem to be particularly worrying for many children and their parents. We feel that it is worth considering how to improve the supports for these families, helping parents to be more aware of community facilities that are available, and striving to improve communication between the different agencies (hospital, general practitioners, schools, etc.) involved.

Notes: Summary In summary, we have found that rf linacs do have a place in fusion, either in an auxiliary role for materials testing or for direct drivers in heavy-ion fusion. For SDI, the particle-beam technology is an attractive candidate for discrimination missions and also for lethality missions. The free-electron laser is also a forerunner among the laser candidates. In many ways, there is less physics development required for these devices and there is an existing high-power technology. But in all of these technologies, in order to scale them up and then space-base them, there is an enormous amount of work yet to be done.
