Notes: Abstract Hall effects on unsteady hydromagnetic flow past a rotating disk are investigated when the fluid at infinity rotates about non-coincident axes. The rotation of the fluid at infinity changes impulsively. It is found that at large time the steady state is reached through inertial oscillations. The frequency of these oscillations first increases, reaches a maximum and then decreases with increase in Hall parameter.

Notes: Abstract The transient flow in the Ekman layer of an elastico-viscous liquid near a flat plate is discussed. Initially the fluid and the plate were rotating together and the plate then suddently starts moving with a uniform velocity in its own plane relative to the rotating frame of reference. It is shown that the ultimate steady state is reached through decay of inertial oscillations whose frequency decreases with increase in the elastic parameter.

Notes: Abstract The combined effect of rotation and Hall current on the MHD Couette flow have been studied. The heat transfer characteristic have also been discussed on taking the viscous and Joule dissipation into account. The primary and the secondary velocity components increase with increase in Hall parameter but the primary velocity decreases with increase in rotation parameter. It is seen that the rate of heat transfer at the stationary plate is independent of both the Hall parameter and the rotation parameter. The rate of heat transfer at the moving plate increases with increase in Hall parameter, while it decreases with increase in rotation parameter. The values of the critical Eckert number at which the direction of the heat flow changes increases with increase in Hall parameter.

Notes: Summary An exact solution has been obtained for the problem of Hall effects on the hydromagnetic flow due to an impulsive start of a porous flat plate. It is observed that in the initial stages there is no inertial oscillation while at large time the steady state is reached through inertial oscillations. The time to attain the steady state increases with increase in Hall parameter.

Notes: Summary The unsteady hydromagnetic flow of a viscous incompressible fluid in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field in a rotating parallel plate channel with oscillating pressure gradient is investigated. An exact solution of the governing equations for the fully developed flow is obtained in closed form. The solution in dimensionless form contains three parameters: the Hartman NumberM 2,K 2, the reciprocal of the Ekman Number, and ω the frequency of oscillation. The effects of these parameters on the flow field are studied. For large values ofK 2 and ω there arise thin double-decker boundary layers near the plates of the channel and thin boundary layers for largeM 2.

Notes: Summary Analytical expressions of dust and fluid velocities have been obtained for small amplitude waves having large wave length. Equations giving the wave-velocity and its damping factor have been derived. Corresponding graphs for various values of dust parameters and elasticity of the wall of the thin walled tube have been drawn. It is found that both the wave-velocity and its damping factor decrease with the increase in mass-concentration of dust and also they increase with the increase in Poisson's ratio of the wall of the tube.

Notes: Summary Couette flow of a dusty gas between two parallel infinite plates has been studied for impulsive start as well as for uniformly accelerated start of one of the plates. The problem has been solved with the help of Laplace Transform technique. It is found that the dust velocity in the case of accelerated start of the plate is less than the fluid velocity, for moderate value of the relaxation time of the dust particles and they become equal when the dust particles become very fine. It is observed that the magnitude of the shear stress is larger when the plate starts with uniform acceleration than when it is impulsively started to move with uniform velocity.

Notes: Summary The following mixed boundary value problem in deformation theory of porous and elastic medium is considered. The bounding surface of the semiinfinite medium has a prescribed normal displacement within a circular area and prescribed stresses outside the circle. The techniques of integral transform are used. The expressions for the stresses and displacements are written down. As a special case, the indentation by a flat ended cylinder is considered and the distribution of pore-fluid pressure in the neighbourhood of the loaded area is shown graphically.

Notes: A novel thermoplastic polyurethane was prepared from cardanol, a renewable resource and a waste of the cashew industry. Cardanol was recovered from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) by double vacuum distillation. It was characterized by CHN analysis and IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy techniques. Cardanol is a meta-substituted long chain phenol. The long aliphatic chain unit substituent was found to be a monoene. The monomer, 4-[(4-hydroxy-2-pentadecenylphenyl)diazenyl]phenol was prepared from cardanol. It was a dihydroxy compound as characterized by CHN analyzer, UV, and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The polyurethane was synthesized from this dihydroxy compound by the treatment with 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) in dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent at 80-90°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The polymer was characterized by 1H-NMR, FTIR, and UV spectroscopy. The elemental analysis was done for determining the percentage content of C, H, and N, and the intrinsic viscosity [η] of polymer showed 1.85 dL/gm. Thermogravimetric investigations (TGA) of the cardanol, the dihydroxy compound, and the polyurethane were performed to study their decomposition. The semicrystalline nature of the PU was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA). The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXS) study of PU shew a broad amorphous halo indicative of absence of crystallinity in the polymer, which has been explained as due to strong hydrogen bonding in the hard phase. PU may possibly be useful as a telecommunication and as a nonlinear optical material. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 391-400, 1998
