    Notes: Summary Computer simulation of a relatively simple model can reproduce the main characteristics of the firing patters of some nerve cells. The abdominal stretch receptor of the crayfish has provided an analogous biological model. Synaptic input impulses were simulated by randomly distributed, short lasting transmembrane current pulses. Under these experimental conditions the stretch receptor neurone largely behaved as predicted by the computer simulations.

    Notes: Summary The behaviour of neurones during signal transmission is determined partly by the input to the nerve cell and partly by its inherent properties. A detailed knowledge of the spike trains, which are input to and output from a synapse, may yield information about these synaptic mechanisms. This problem has been treated in relation to data from the dorsal spino-cerebellar tract (DSCT) cells monosynaptically activated from primary endings of muscle spindles. After a description of the firing pattern of these cells the behaviour of various models are examined by computer simulation. A particular type of model approximates the behaviour of the DSCT neurones closely with a rather narrow set of parameters. The model predicts that about 15 primary afferent fibres from one muscle converge on one DSCT cell and that the average size of their EPSPs may be as large as 50% of the threshold of firing.

    Notes: Summary Chicken embryos were treated with partially paralysing doses ofd-tubocurarine (dtc) from embryonic (E) days 6 to 10. The pattern of innervation of the lateral gastrocnemius (GL) muscle was examined both morphologically and physiologically just before hatching on day E20 or E21. There was a 70% increase in number of surviving motor neurons in the lateral motor column and a 50% increase in the number of myelinated axons in the nerve to GL. The GL muscle was significantly atrophic, with an average weight of 40% of normal. The atrophy was largely due to the reduced size of the muscle fibres. The mean size of the motor units was essentially unchanged or perhaps slightly increased. There was a striking increase in the level of polyneuronal innervation of the muscle fibres, both in terms of number of synaptic sites per fibre and number of axons innervating each site. Spontaneous miniature endplate potentials (mepps) indicated focal innervation of the fibres in the normal muscle. Most fibres in the dtc-treated muscles had mepps of widely varying time courses, and there was no simple relation between amplitude and rise time. Many of the slow mepps were not represented in the endplate potentials evoked by nerve stimulation. The quantal content of the endplate potential (epp) was generally increased in the dtc-treated muscles. The findings are discussed in terms of a retrograde signal from muscle to nerve and its dependence on muscle activity.

    Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of neuromuscular junctions of rat soleus muscles 1–40 days postnatally was examined for possible morphological correlates of the transient polyneuronal innervation which is present in newborn rats. Several vesicle-laden profiles of terminal axons are seen to contact each muscle fibre up to 8 days postnatally. Axon terminals often lie close together, without Schwann cell intervention. Between days 8 and 16 the number of profiles of terminals on each muscle fibre is reduced, and both Schwann cells and ridge-like extensions of muscle fibre cytoplasm intervene between and separate axon terminals. No signs of degenerating intramuscular axons or axon terminals could be found. It is suggested that the redundant terminals are eliminated by retraction into the parent axons. This process is apparently accomplished without any morphological signs of degeneration.
