Notes: Mechanical behavior of processed AZ91D magnesium alloy by equal channel angularextrusion during semi-solid isothermal compression was investigated using semi-solid isothermalcompression test. The results show that there are four stages, drastic increase of true stress, drasticfalling of true stress, steady stage and increase of true stress. With the increase of holding time ordeformation temperature, required true stress for obtaining same true strain falls evidently and peakstress and steady stress also fall in true stress-strain curve. With increasing strain rate, steady stressalso increase. Peak stress will increase or decrease with the sudden increase or fall of strain rate.During semi-solid isothermal compression, plastic deformation of semi-solid billet mainly dependson plastic deformation of solid phases and their rotation and sliding. Coarse grains occur in upperposition adjacent to compression die’s surface and fine grains occur in the central and free surfacepositions of billets

Notes: There have been five academic conferences organized by the chairman of semi-solidprocessing academic committee, Prof. Shoujing Luo, in China since 2000. Based on theachievements of the five academic conferences, six aspects of research progress of semi-solidprocessing in China will be discussed here by the authors, which includes the research onfundamental theories of semi-solid processing, that is, theories of high-pressure solidification, plastic deformation densification and rheological filling; the research on technological theories ofsemi-solid processing, that is, theories of preparation of semi-solid slurries or billets and theirspheroidization, theories of thixoforging and controlling of technological parameters, theories ofdouble controlling of semi-solid die casting and semi-solid die forging and their numericalsimulation; the research on characterization of semi-solid metal and their design; the applicationpresent status and potential prediction of semi-solid processing; present status of academicorganization, academic communication and cultivating persons and the differences between theother countries and China. The research results show that China is a large country for metalprocessing, but China isn’t a strong in metal processing. As with other processing technologies, under the support the government foundations and other funds, more research work should be donein semi-solid processing and originality innovation and key technologies on preparation semi-solidslurries or billets and forming must be completely successfully in order to improve the competitivepowder of semi-solid processing. It is should be noted that semi-solid processing will become aimportant forming method of simple, high efficient, low cost and good quality in the fields ofmaterials processing

Notes: The thixoforging process in which magazine plates of AZ91D magnesium alloy werethixoforged in semi-solid state using semi-solid billets prepared by common SIMA method and newSIMA method was investigated. The results show that the pressure has a great influence on thesemi-solid billet’s ability to fill die’s cavity. When the pressure is 500KN, the semi-solid billet can’tfill the die’s cavity completely. When the pressure is 2000KN, the semi-solid billet can fill the die’scavity completely. Room temperature mechanical properties, such as yield strength of 201.4MPa,ultimate tensile strength of 321.8MPa and elongation of 15.3%, can be obtained successfully whenthe technological parameters, including pressure of 200KN, die preheating temperature of 723K,holding for 20min at 818K, are satisfied. Comparing with common SIMA, mechanical properties ofroom temperature and high temperature at 373K[removed info]are enhanced heavily

Notes: Thixotropy is the most important characteristic of semi-solid materials, and it is decidedby the variation of microstructure during action of handling. In this paper, for the sake of theindustrial thixoforming and numerical simulation, microstructure and stress variation of semisolidmagnesium alloys during isothermal compression is researched. Here, samples are heated to thedesired temperature in the empty space with various holding times and compressed horizontally.Stress–strain curves during compression can be given directly by the experimental computer, andeach of curves show a peak stress in a small strain and then decrease rapidly, which originallybecause of the thixotropy of semisolid materials. Moreover, thixotropy of semisolid magnesiumalloys is clearer with the evolution of microstructures including agglomeration and deagglomerationof solid particles and the moving way of liquid at different places and strain under differentconditions. Microstructures during isothermal compression show that the deagglomeration of solidparticles increase with increasing the strain rate, therefore, the thixotropy of semisolid magnesiumalloys increases. However, when solid volume fractions are lower, the agglomeration of solidparticles doesn’t change obviously with increase or decrease factors, meaning that the thixotropy issmaller. Relationships between thixotropy and microstructure at other different conditions are alsogiven according to the experiments and analysis

Notes: By using equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) as strain induced step in strain inducedmelt activated (SIMA) and completing melt activated step by using semi-solid isothermal treatment, anew SIMA method is introduced firstly. The results show that semi-solid billet with highly spheroidaland homogeneous grains with the average grain size of 20μm can be prepared by new SIMA method.High mechanical properties, such as ultimate tensile strength of 321.8MPa and elongation of 15.2%are obtained in magazine plate components thixoforged using semi-solid billet prepared by newSIMA

Notes: In this paper, thixoforging of a magazine plate made of AZ91D magnesium alloy wereinvestigated by means of numerical simulation and experiments. Numerical simulation results showthat with increasing punch displacement, local bending, formation of a concave shell part and bulkplastic deformation occurs in billet continuously. Equivalent strain and stress increase and thetemperature of the semi-solid billet decreases. When the temperature of the semi-solid billet or thedie temperature is elevated, equivalent stain and stress decrease. Optimal technological parameterssuch as a billet temperature of 545°C, die temperature of 450°C and punch velocity of 15 mm/swere obtained by numerical simulation. Experimental results demonstrate that magazine plates withhigh mechanical properties such as tensile strength of 316.8 MPa, yield strength of 228.3 MPa andelongation of 12.6 % can be manufactured successfully when the optimal technological parametersselected according to the results of numerical simulation are applied
