Summary The effect of the physical (hydrodynamic) stress generated by aeration and agitation in suspension cultures onCatharanthus roseus cells was studied. The intensity of the physical stress was closely related to the growth rate of the cells, the maximum cell mass, the size distribution of cell aggregates, the contents of the cell wall, and each component of the cell wall.
