On Tanning Compounds from the Wood of Chestnut and Oak, VI. The Structure of VescalaginVescalagin, a crystalline tanning compound from the wood of chestnut (Castanea sativa) and oak (Quercus sesseliflora), has the structure 1 and is therefore anomeric with castalagin (2). This structure is proved by comparing NMR-structural analysis of 1 and 2, and of its comparable pentadecamethyl-(1a, 2a), monoacetyl-pentadecamethyl- (1b, 2b) and hexadecaacetyl derivatives (1c, 2c) furthermore by the cleavage of pentadecamethyl-vescalagin (1a) with sodium methoxide/methanol solution to produce dimethyl (-)-2,3,4,2′,3′4′-hexamethoxy-6,6′-diphenate and the methyl ester of nonamethylneovescalin. A primary product from this cleavage reaction is isolated too and elucidated as the methyl ester of pentadecamethyl-neovescalagin (4a).
Notes:
