Notizen: This article attempts to connect the psychoanalytical theory of literature with the structural and semiotic approaches to the literary text. The link between these approaches is the role of repetition in literature. It is argued that repetition is related to the psychoanalytical concept on the one hand, and on the other that repetition and parallelism are founding structural principles of literature. The relevance of the semiotic concept of the icon as a bridge between these approaches to literature is explored, and the role of repetition on the phonological, narratological, and thematic levels of the literary text is exemplified.

Notizen: The objective of this article is not to write an apology for pornography, not because it is impossible to defend, but rather because it has been done so brilliantly by Susan Sontag in her seminal essay ‘‘The Pornographic Imagination’’.〈link href="#a1"/〉 The objective is to analyze a certain kind of literary pornography from both literary and psychological, here psychoanalytic, points of view. The term covers, basically, pictorial and literary representations of sexual activities. Literary pornography has been cultivated in drama, poetry, and prose fiction, whether short stories or novels. Furthermore, there are representations of sexual activities in the visual arts and literature considered great by any artistic standard, and then there is a tremendous lot of mere trash. Finally, pornography is not something given once and for all, but a designation used relative to the norms of a given group at a given time. Much of what our great-grandparents, grandparents, and even our parents considered pornographic, seems to most of us today endowed with a certain innocence and sentimentality. To encompass all the facets of this subject in a single article is impossible. This essay considers a certain aspect of genre convention: pornography presented in a framework of education.

Notizen: Summary 1. In leech (Macrobdella decora) segmental ganglia, stimulation of the medial nociceptive cell (Nmed) evoked a short latency (2–3 ms) excitatory postsynaptic potential (epsp) of 1–4 mV amplitude in the Nut cell, a nearby identified neuron of unknown function. 2. The epsp's were abolished by high concentrations of Mg and enhanced by high concentrations of Ca. 3. Following intracellular injection of tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA) into the presynaptic Nmed cell, the amplitude of the epsp increased to 5–7 mV in a graded manner. 4. In contrast, no excitatory synaptic responses were obtained in the Nut cell after stimulation of the lateral nociceptive cell (Nlat). 5. These results strongly suggest the presence of a monosynaptic connection between the Nmed and the Nut cell and present more evidence that the two nociceptive cells are not identical.

Notizen: Summary 1. Properties of divalent cation potentials carried by either Sr2+ or Ca2+ ions in Na+-free, TEA-Ringer solution were characterized in identified neurons of two species of leeches (Macrobdella andHaementeria). 2. InMacrobdella, the overshoot of the potentials varied logarithmically with [Sr2+]0 (28.5 mV per 10-fold change). The overshoot, $$\dot V_{\max } $$ , and duration of the potentials increased with increasing divalent cation concentration and saturated at about 20 to 30 mM [Sr2+]0. 3. The $$\dot V_{\max } $$ , amplitude, and duration of the potentials were reversibly blocked by Co2+ and Mn2+. The block by Mn2+ could be well-fitted by a reverse Langmuir-curve with an apparentK I of 100 micromolar. 4. The local anesthetic procaine also reversibly inhibited the $$\dot V_{\max } $$ and duration of the potentials. The inhibition was greater at alkaline pH suggesting that procaine blocks the calcium channel from inside the membrane. 5. The identified leech neurons examined inMacrobdella varied considerably in their ability to sustain somatic divalent cation potentials. Stimulation of T cells and most motoneurons produced no or only weak potentials, whereas stimulation of Retzius, N, Nut, and AP cells evoked overshooting potentials of several seconds' duration. 6. Stimulation of the ALG cell ofHaementeria in normal Ringer solution evoked a slowly-rising, purely Ca2+-dependent potential of approximately 100 ms duration. This response was TTX-resistant, unaffected by complete removal of Na+ from the Ringer solution, and abolished by 1 mM Mn2+. The overshoot varied logarithmically with a slope of 28 mV/decade change in [Ca2+]0.

Notizen: Summary 1. The properties of a Ca-activated Cl-current ICl(Ca) were investigated with the two electrode voltage clamp technique in the AL1 cell of the leechHaementeria ghilianii. 2. ICl(Ca) was revealed after Cl-loading of the cells, with outward K-currents eliminated by replacement of intra- and extracellular K with Cs, and with Na currents blocked by 1μM TTX. CsCl-containing electrodes were used for recording and current passing. 3. In response to depolarizing voltage steps the cells exhibited sustained Cl-dependent currents the size and polarity of which varied with [Cl]0. The reversal potentials of tail currents of this conductance varied with [Cl]0 as predicted for the equilibrium potential of Cl by the Nernst equation and were unaffected by changes in extracellular cation concentration. 4. The decay of the Cl-dependent tail-currents followed a process which could be described by the sum of two exponentials with time constantsτ 1 andτ 2 on the order of about 100 ms and 800 ms, respectively. No voltage-dependence of the time constants was apparent; however,τ 1 varied with the amount of Ca-influx. 5. The Cl-current required Ca for its activation. All current flow was abolished in Mn-containing Ringer solutions and when Ba was substituted for Ca. However, Sr could partially substitute for Ca as an activator of the current. 6. The activation curve for Cl-dependent tail currents was U-shaped directly paralleling the amount of Ca-influx, and no Cl-current flow could be induced at depolarizations below the activation threshold or beyond the apparent reversal potential for the Ca-current. 7. ICl(Ca) was impermeable to large anions such as proprionate and acetate, but was permeable to both Br and Cl ions.

Notizen: Abstract. By immunocytochemistry the distribution and developmental expression of the small EF-hand calcium-binding protein calsensin in the peripheral (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) of the three hirudinid leech species Haemopis, Hirudo, and Macrobdella was compared. Labeling with calsensin-specific antibodies demonstrated that there was a pronounced difference in the distribution of calsensin immunoreactivity in the CNS of these leeches. In Haemopis more than 70 neurons were labeled, whereas the number in Hirudo was 51 and in Macrobdella only 8. Furthermore, the expression of calsensin in identified cells common to all three leech species also differed. Immunoblot analysis indicated that this variability was not likely to be due to multiple proteins or isoforms being recognized by the calsensin antibody. Labeling of embryos in various stages of development shows that the ontogeny of calsensin expression in the CNS is a gradual process with some neurons expressing calsensin immediately after completion of neurogenesis, about one-third of the way through embryogenesis, and others expressing calsensin only postembryonically. In contrast to the variability in the pattern and temporal expression by CNS neurons, the early embryonic calsensin expression in a small subgroup of sensillar PNS neurons was a shared feature by all three leech species. These findings suggest that calsensin may have different functional properties in CNS and PNS neurons.

Notizen: Little is known about what determines the nuclear matrix or how its reorganization is regulated during mitosis. In this study we report on a monoclonal antibody, mAb2A, which identifies a novel nuclear structure in Drosophila embryos which forms a diffuse meshwork at interphase but which undergoes a striking reorganization into a spindle-like structure during pro- and metaphase. Double labelings with α-tubulin and mAb2A antibodies demonstrate that the microtubules of the mitotic apparatus co-localize with this mAb2A labeled structure during metaphase, suggesting it may serve a role in microtubule spindle assembly and/or function during nuclear division. That the mAb2A-labeled nuclear structure is essential for cell division and/or maintenance of nuclear integrity was directly demonstrated by microinjection of mAb2A into early syncytial embryos which resulted in a disintegration of nuclear morphology and perturbation of mitosis. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
