Notes: summary  The aims of this investigation were: (i) to study a group of dry mouth Sjögren's syndrome (SS) patients comprising individuals with pathological and non-pathological amounts of rest saliva and (ii) to compare these two categories of SS patients with a sex- and age-matched control group with respect to their periodontal and dental status. Thirty-three dry mouth patients and 33 sex- and age-matched patients, referred to the same private dental clinic in southern Norway, were examined for rest and stimulated saliva, as well as their dental and periodontal status. All patients were referred to the local hospital for blood and urine examinations. The dry mouth SS patients were all of the secondary type. Volumes of rest and stimulated saliva were significantly lower in the low saliva SS group compared with the high saliva SS group; the values for immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgA were similarly lower for the low saliva group, but not for IgM which was significantly higher. The two SS subgroups and their controls were compared for the volume of rest and stimulated saliva, which showed a statistically significant lower volumes for the low saliva SS group compared with the control group. None of the subgroups and their controls differed concerning filled or missing teeth, but the total SS group revealed significantly higher number of missing teeth. The periodontal and dental status did not show any statistically significant differences except for a few scattered higher periodontal level losses of attachment in the SS subgroups. The blood and urine analyses showed statistically significant higher values for sedimentation rate, white blood cell count and haemoglobin in the SS low saliva group compared with the control group while anti-streptolysin was lower. In the high saliva SS group only sedimentation rate and white cell count were higher compared with the control. The conclusions is SS patients do not have an increased risk for developing periodontitis.

Notes: Abstract  A chemotaxonomic screening of the seed oil fatty acids of 22 common, edible berry species belonging to 13 genera (Vaccinium, Oxycoccus, Arctosta-phylos, Empetrum, Hippophaë, Chamaepericlymenum, Sambucus, Rosa, Fragaria, Rubus, Sorbus, Prunusand Ribes) that grow wild in northern Europe was carried out. The highest oil content in the seeds (≈30% d.w.) was measured in Vaccinium, Oxycoccusand Sambucus, and the lowest in Arctostaphylos, Empetrum, Rosaand Chamaepericlymenumspecies (〈10% d.w.). The smaller the seed of a berry species within a genus, the higher was the oil content. The mass of 100 seeds varied from 10 mg (V. myrtillus) to 2950 mg (P. padus). Fatty acids of triacylglycerols were analysed as methyl esters by gas chromatography. Typically the most abundant fatty acids were linoleic, α-linolenic, oleic and palmitic acids. Exceptions were S. aucupariaand P. padus, which contained hardly any α-linolenic acid. Currants (Ribes nigrum, Ri. spicatumand Ri. alpinum) also contained γ-linolenic acid (11–16 mol%) and stearidonic acid (3–6 mol%). The content and composition of the seed oil of various berry species within the same genus, or within the same family, were similar, thus supporting the commonly accepted taxonomic classification.

Notes: Abstract  Seed oils of 22 northern wild berry species collected in Finland were studied by ammonia negative-ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry using a direct exposure probe for sample introduction. The berries belonging to 13 genera (Vaccinium, Oxycoccus, Arctostaphylos, Empetrum, Hippophaë, Chamaepericlymenum, Sambucus, Rosa, Fragaria, Rubus, Sorbus, Prunus and Ribes) represented the most important Scandinavian edible berry species. The mass spectrometric analyses provided information about the different molecular weight species of triacylglycerols and their proportions in the seed oils studied. Triacylglycerols with 54 acyl carbons were the most abundant components in all berry oils (72–97 mol%). The proportions of triacylglycerols with 52 and 56 acyl carbons were only 2–23 mol% and 0–6 mol%, respectively. The results were in good agreement with the fatty acid compositions of the berry seed oils reported elsewhere. The species-specific molecular weight patterns varied from the random fatty acid distribution most clearly in the seed oils of P. padus (P=0.03) and Rubus chamaemorus (P=0.02). Negative-ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry is a useful tool for the screening of triacylglycerol profiles, as shown in the present study. Measurement of the oil or fat authenticity or of the mixing ratios of different oils is one potential application of the fast analytical technique described.

Notes: Abstract Lead isotope determinations were made on galenas from three strata-bound sulfide ores in the early Proterozoic (Svecokarelian) Bergslagen district of central Sweden and four epigenetic deposits in the Älvdalen and Vansbro districts in the early to middle Proterozoic post-Svecokarelian belt. The leads from the strata-bound Bergslagen deposits show exceptional isotopic homogeneity over large areas. Their isotopic composition suggests the existence of a pre-Svecokarelian crust in the district and is consistent with exhalative-sedimentary ore formation in an active continental margin environment. The Vansbro and Älvdalen leads display constant compositions within each district, but marked divergence between the districts. Their compositions preclude derivation exclusively from recycled Svecokarelian lead and suggest a substantial lead contribution from a mantle-like source. The difference between model ages and geologic ages for many of the deposits, with a small but significant excess of radiogenic lead, suggests a significant deviation of the Fennoscandian Shield from conventional global lead evolution models.

Notes: [Auszug] In the milkweed bug, Oncopeltusfasciatus, the corpus allatum is an unpaired organ situated closely behind the corpora cardiaca and the hypocerebral ganglion. This organ complex, which is intimately associated with the walls of aorta, has nervous connexions with the pars intercerebralis region of ...

Notes: [Auszug] At the same time, changes are observed in the incretory system. In the emerging female the corpus allatum is small (Fig. la, ca), but increases, as already shown by Novak3, if she is fed. In the present material it increased to about twelve times the initial volume in fifteen days (Fig. 16). In ...
