    Notes: Biotechnology is an open-ended scientific challenge in extremis. The generalised term ‘biotechnology’ encompasses an immense range of disparate sectors, all of which are natural outlets for entrepreneurs. Innovators will reign supreme. Fortunes will be made - and lost. There is, however, a hidden agenda. Biotechnology is set to have the most profound effect on mankind, ranging from health, environment and longevity. The latter, for example, has major direct effects on social issues such as retirement, age and pensions. These issues will have major effects on virtually every question of public interest. The hidden agenda needs to be disclosed, and it is incumbent upon the scientific fraternity to provide better and more understandable descriptions of the technologies involved. Better forms of publicity are required that will maximise knowledge. Above all, global benefits need to be stressed. In that way, the public can better judge whether they are beneficial - or have more sinister undertones.

    Notes: Examines the importance of e-commerce in the retail economy. The analysis is placed in the broader context of economic and social change and provides a theoretical framework for evaluating the growth of e-commerce as a major distribution channel. By exploring the results of the recently released "Household Internet survey of Canadian households", the paper documents the actual shopping behaviour of Internet shoppers from a variety of perspectives. The Canadian experience should provide analysis with a series of benchmarks and trends on which to evaluate the adoption of e-commerce in other markets.

    Notes: Purpose - To detail the changing nature of retail and service activity in Canada's downtowns and examine the role of business improvement areas (BIAs) in promoting downtown vitality. Design/methodology/approach - The research is based on a combination of retail structural analysis and case study research. The structural analysis provides data on transitioning urban demographics and tracks retail and service activity sales change in Canada's major metropolitan downtowns. The case study reports an overview of findings from in-depth research with the Downtown Yonge BIA. A small number of retail metrics are presented. Findings - The paper highlights the significant suburb shift in retail activity across Canada's metropolitan areas and the associated challenges that this has resulted in for the downtown. The role of BIAs are outlined, and examined with reference to operation of the BIA concept within the downtown core of Canada's largest metropolitan market, Toronto. Research limitations/implications - The research has been selective in focusing on the Downtown Yonge BIA, the experiences of BIAs across Toronto (and other Canada metropolitan areas) are likely to vary widely. Highlights the need to develop metrics to measure performance and compare BIAs. Practical implications - The paper provides an interesting perspective on BIA strategies, with the selected metrics providing BIA managers and urban planners with a set of additional measures to assess BIA performance Originality/value - The paper relates BIA planning to the development of performance metrics.

    Notes: Abstract Can an analytical tool for comparing environmental risks and policy activities be used to evaluate their relative efficacy in ultimately changing the allocation of public funds? Some insight is possible through a review of comparative risk projects that have been carried out at the city, state, and national levels, as well as among Indian tribes, over the past 12 years. The lessons from this review should apply to the field of public health. For every comparison of environmental issues, such as clean-air standards with fish consumption advisories, there is a parallel discussion of public health priorities and strategies, such as antismoking and pregnancy prevention programs, immunization programs and disease surveillance efforts, or well-baby clinics and food safety programs. Lessons from comparative risk projects and processes may offer the public health community new ways of thinking about using stakeholder assessment processes in developing public health policy.

    Notes: My aim in this paper is to make the case for encouraging friendship in sport. First, I argue that sport is especially conducive to friendship. Second, I argue that since friendship is life-enhancing then to participate in sport and not to have made friends is to have failed to take a life-enhancing opportunity. Third, I argue that there are sporting benefits to be had from sporting friendships. Finally, I say something about the role of friendship in sport achieving its broad political aim of helping ‘to build a better and more peaceful world’.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of different vacuum pressures on the rate of parthenogenesis was studied in 109 cycles of laparoscopic follicle aspiration. A total of 388 follicles was aspirated at settings of vacuum pressure of 100, 75, and 50 mm Hg. Parthenogenesis occurred at the rates of 5.9, 7, and 1%, respectively. The difference between 100 and 50 mm Hg was statistically significant (P〈0.025). We conclude that the rate of parthenogenesis is influenced by the magnitude of vacuum pressure.
