Notizen: In this article, Phyllis Jones and John Swain examine parents' perceptions of their involvement in the process of Annual Review for pupils with Statements of SEN. They report that they conducted a small-scale research project with parents who had experience in a variety of schools, including both special and mainstream. A questionnaire and recorded discussions in two groups were used in order to gather data from parents. The experiences of these parents suggest that, while their views might be valued in principle, they can be devalued in practice. The authors go on to suggest key processes in facilitating the realisation of the principles of Annual Review in practice.

Notizen: An early postpartum hospital discharge program for post-delivery mothers and infants is described in three phases: antepartum planning, postpartum instruction, and home follow-up. Review of statistics after two years showed few complications, and evaluation of the program by means of a questionnaire showed consumer satisfaction.

Notizen: Concern has been expressed over many years about the lack of time and attention given to the preparation and training of teachers to meet the diverse needs of all children. In this article, Alison Bishop and Phyllis Jones describe a small-scale research project designed to explore the attitudes and perceptions of a group of student teachers towards children with complex and profound learning difficulties. In this study, the students were interviewed before and after participation in structured workshop activities with children. The results suggest that many more student teachers would benefit from the further development of the approach described here.

Notizen: Alison Bishop and Phyllis Jones both work in the School of Education at Northumbria University where they teach on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Phyllis Jones specialises in disability issues and Alison Bishop focuses on early years education. For the project described in this paper, they combined their areas of expertise, devising a small–scale research project to explore the experiences of a group of early years science specialist student teachers as they took part in workshops with a group of early years children with severe and profound learning difficulties. The research explores the changing attitudes and perceptions of the students with regard to the learning and teaching of science with young children. It becomes clear that there is a realization for many students that science can make a significant contribution to the education of children with severe and profound learning difficulties in the early years. The authors also discuss the need for training to equip the students to meet the challenges and rewards of working with children with severe and profound learning difficulties in their future teaching careers.

Notizen: Phyllis Jones, Senior Lecturer (Special Educational Needs), and John Swain, Reader in Disability Studies, at the University of Northumbria, report on the first stage of a qualitative investigation into participants’ views of, and feelings about, Annual Reviews. Although this article was submitted before the publication of Special Educational Needs: Consultation Document on the Proposed Revision of the SEN Code of Practice (DfEE, 1999), both highlight the need ‘to reduce the paperwork required of schools and of LEAs in relation to annual reviews’ (p.4). The Document does not envisage any fundamental change to the current regulatory framework for Annual Reviews but this small-scale study highlights the pressing need for organisationalreform.

Notizen: Phyllis Jones is assistant professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of South Florida. In this article, she describes the work she did while acting as consultant to an Early Years Childcare Development Partnership (EYCDP) in the north of England. Part of this process entailed developing a Charter for Inclusion for the Partnership. Phyllis Jones and her colleagues decided to draw upon the views of children and designed a picture booklet, with questions, in order to encourage a small group of children, aged between six and 14 years, to talk about inclusion. Parents or primary care workers worked through the booklet with the children, exploring what inclusion may mean for them from general and personal perspectives. A total of 14 booklets were returned, with responses exemplifying the strong contribution children are able to make, not only to the philosophical drive for greater inclusion, but also to our understanding of what helps and hinders inclusive practice. Phyllis Jones reviews those ideas here and also reflects on some of the methodological issues that arise when researching the views of children in innovative and imaginative ways.

Notizen: Abstract Hyalopomatus cancerum n.sp., epizoic onspider-crabs (Encephaloides) in a low-oxygenarea of the Arabian Sea, differs from other species ofthe genus in lacking opercula.Larger serpulids in Indian Ocean ’Galathea‘ samplesfrom great depths, tentatively referred to Protissimplex Ehlers, mostly bear vesicles on tips ofpinnulate radioles. These are too small to occlude thetube mouth, so perhaps they and the largervascularised vesicles of Apomatus may help inrespiration. The BIOFAR Survey off the Faroe Islandsshowed that Protula (always non-operculate) andApomatus are the main serpulid genera in thedeeper channels. Protis, Protula and Apomatus, which are amongst the best-known ofdeep-sea serpulids, are like early postlarval stagesof Serpula and Hydroides in lackingopercula, or in having thin-walled opercular vesicleson pinnulate stalks. They thus support the view thathypomorphy is somewhat characteristic of abyssal taxa.Considering non-operculate serpulids of shallow seas, many species of Spiraserpula lack opercula, butsecrete sharp ridges and spines on the inner walls oftheir tubes, which must deter or trap predatorytube-invaders; Floriprotis may be protected bycoral, whilst Salmacina, Paraprotula, Microprotula and Paraprotis dendrova Uchidaincubate their embryos, so have special respiratoryneeds.
