Notes: Summary Standardized operations including incisions and ablations were carried out on pigthroats immediately prior to evaluation of the depths of thermal damage zones measured with a unit of 30 mikrons. The following parameters were applied on the tissue: 1) Continuous versus single pulse mode. 2) equal energy impacts with variation of time and power density. 3) super pulse versus non super pulse. In the 1st series the tissue damage for all tissues examined were significantly lower in the single pulse mode than in the continuous mode. In the 2nd series the pooled material showed a significance in favour of short impacts with high power density although the total energy required for a single operation was up to 40% higher in the high power/short time series. The 3rd series showed no significance in differences between super pulse and nonsuper pulse damage when applying the same average output on the laryngeal tissues involved.

Notes: Summary Nine physiotherapists were included in a training programme whose object was to elucidate the effect of isometric contractions of long duration. The isometric endurance of the left elbow flexors was trained 10 times daily until exhaustion. The load was 60% of 1 RM. The elbow joint was kept flexed 90 °, the forearm being horizontal. The training period was 5 weeks with no training on Sundays. Before and after the experiment the subjects had tests of dynamic strength, isometric strength, dynamic endurance, isometric endurance, and the ability to perform repeated isometric contractions of 5 seconds' duration, interrupted by an interval of 2 seconds. The training increased the isometric endurance by 84% and the ability to perform repeated isometric contractions by 219%. On the other hand, the dynamic endurance was only increased by 92.5%, a slight increase when compared with that which may result from experiments training the dynamic endurance. The effect upon the isometric and dynamic strength was moderate, an increase of 11% and 15.4% respectively — moderate when compared with what is obtained by training with maximum loads. The results are discussed.

Notes: Summary Nine physiotherapists took part in a training programme of 100 dynamic contractions of the left elbow flexors a day. The load was 60% of 1 RM, the frequency 28 per minute, and the training period 6 weeks. Before and after the training period the dynamic strength, the dynamic endurance, and the isometric endurance were tested. The training resulted in a moderate increase in dynamic, strength, an enormous increase in dynamic endurance, but no increase in isometric endurance. The results are discussed.

Notes: Conclusions A training program of repeated isometric contractions with submaximal tension of the elbow flexors, increased to a striking degree the ability to perform isometric contractions until fatigue, while the ability to perform dynamic contractions of the same muscle group remained almost unaltered. This is interpreted as a change in the function of the parts of the central nervous system involved, summarized in the term “motor learning”. It is stressed that “motorlearning” is a major factor when increase of the endurance is the aim of the training. Isometric contractions with submaximal tension do not seem to be an optimal stimulus if an increase of the isometric strength is required.

Notes: Summary and conclusions The object of the present study was to investigate the effect of varying the number of repetitions of a dynamic exercise upon 1) isometric strength 2) dynamic strength and 3) endurance. 3 groups of 4 females each were established. They performed 150, 100 and 50 contractions, respectively, per session. They lifted a load of 60% of the One Repetition Maximum (1 RM) by flexion of the elbow joint. A fourth group of 4 subjects was used as a control group. After 30 days of training during 6 weeks there was no increase in isometric strength in any of the groups. However, the training did result in an increase of dynamic strength and endurance. The increase in endurance was tremendous while the increase in dynamic strength was comparatively modest. A possible explanation for this discrepancy is discussed. It has been suggested that the apparent discrepancy in the development of the 2 types of strength is the dependance of the two „strengths“ upon additional and/or different factors. The present paper also lends support to the view that there is a relation between the amount of work performed in training and the resulting increase in working capacity. The present work has been carried out by support from Miss P. A. Brandt's Foundation. The authors are greatly indebted to Mr.Howard Knuttgen Ph. D. for his kind help and suggestive advise during this study.
