    Notes: Summary Lipase from Rhizopus arrhizus was immobilized by physical adsorption on hydrophobic microporous polypropylene supports. The immobilized enzyme catalyst was employed for the hydrolysis of palm kernel olein in the presence of n-hexane. The initial rate of lipolysis for vacuum dried immobilized lipase is nearly double that of air dried. The initial rate of lipolysis declines with increase of drying time. Immobilized lipase clearly reveals a relatively high initial rate after 30 days of storage at 4 °C. Stability of the immobilized lipase in buffer could be enhanced up to three-fold that of the free lipase.

    Notes: A novel cross-flow technique for membrane filtration of bacterial cell suspensions was established. This is an air slugs entrapped cross-flow method in which air slugs were generated by introducing air into the cross-flow stream. As air slugs moved along with cross-flow, the disturbance of cell sublayer formation on membrane surface was enhanced. As a consequence, filtration flux was improved and stabilized. The effect of air slugs on improving filtration flux was more pronounced in filtering gram-negative Escherichia coli cell than grampositive Brevibacterium flavum cell. Moreover, air slug was about 50% more effective on reducing filtration resistance using ultrafiltration (UF) membrane of 300,000 molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) than microfiltration (MF) membrane of 0.2 μm. ©1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: High-quality (95%) steam-water critical flow through a straight pipe was studied using high-speed photographic and holographic techniques. The results indicate that most of the water exists as a discontinuous or continuous thin film which flows along the wall with a speed much slower than that of the steam. This results in slip ratios higher than those reported before. Although a separated flow model would seem to describe the actual flow situation more closely than other models, the assumption of thermal equilibrium between phases and the fact that the flow is not separated except close to the exit plane are probably explanations for differences in slip ratios obtained in this study from those predicted.
