Notes: Abstract The effect of cloud feedback on the response of a radiative-convective model to a change in cloud model parameters, atmospheric CO2 concentration, and solar constant has been studied using two different parameterization schemes. The method for simulating the vertical distribution of both cloud cover and cloud optical thickness, which depends on the relative humidity and on the saturation mixing ratio of water vapor, respectively, is the same in both approaches, but the schemes differ with respect to modeling the water vapor profile. In scheme I atmospheric water vapor is coupled to surface parameters, while in scheme II an explicit balance equation for water vapor in the individual atmospheric layers is used. For both models the combined effect of feedbacks due to variations in lapse rate, cloud cover, and cloud optical thickness results in different relationships between changes in surface temperature, planetary temperature, and cloud cover. Specifically, for a CO2 doubling and a 2% increase in solar constant, in both models the surface warming is reduced by cloud feedback, in contrast to no feedback, with the greater reduction in scheme I as compared to that of scheme II.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study is to identify possible factors which could influence the seizure recurrence after anti-epileptic drug (AED) withdrawal in children with partial epilepsy. AED was discontinued in 82 children who had been free of partial epileptic seizures for 2.0–11.0 years (mean 4.7 years). Twenty-four patients (29.3%) had a relapse from a few days to 6.1 years (mean 1.2 years) after AED discontinuation. Significantly more common in children who relapsed were: younger age at beginning of AED withdrawal, occurrence of complicated febrile convulsions (5/24 vs 1/58,P〈0.01), abnormal neurological examination (8/24 vs 8/58,P〈0.05), delayed psychomotor development (7/24 vs 7/58,P〈0.05), focal slowing (6/24 vs 3/58,P〈0.01) and focal epileptiform discharges (7/24 vs 6/58,P〈0.05) in the last EEG before AED discontinuation. Between the two groups no statistical significant differences no statistical significant differences concerning the age at onset of seizures, the duration at AED therapy after the last seizure, the familial occurrence of epilepsy and background EEG abnormalities in the last EEG before AED discontinuation were found. On the basis of EEG, occurrence of febrile convulsions, and neurological and developmental examination it may be possible to predict which children have the best chance to remain free of recurrence after AED discontinuation.

Notes: Bromus inermis Leyss) with unconfounded divergence in lignin and EthFA, such that their independent effects could be determined on in vitro fiber digestibility (IVFD). Eight clones were selected from each of four populations (`Alpha', WB19e, `Lincoln', and WB88S). Selection was successful for EthFA in all populations except WB88S, creating repeatable divergence of 11.2 to 12.5%. Selection was unsuccessful for lignin concentration per se, most likely because of large genotype × environment interactions. Nevertheless, the resulting clones showed significant variation for both EthFA and lignin concentrations and these two variables were nearly independent among the selected clones. Both lignin and EthFA had significant negative effects on 96-h IVFD, regardless of the statistical estimation method used. Across estimation methods, there was not a clear difference in the magnitude of the lignin and EthFA effects on IVFD. Both the total amount of lignin in the cell wall and the amount of ferulic acid cross-linking lignin to polysaccharides via ether bonds appear to be under genetic control, and both components play a role in regulating the genetic potential for rumen degradation of cell walls in smooth bromegrass. These clones are a potential tool for conducting animal feeding trials using forages with relatively unconfounded differences in a single cell wall characteristic.

Notes: Summary The influence of Phenprocoumarol on the growth of the bone in secondary osteons was investigated on mongrel dogs not yet fully grown. The growth of the osteons was labelled with tetracycline. Results were obtained planimetrically on microphotograms of labelled osteons. A significant reduction in bone growth in contrast to that of control dogs was found during the second experimental period (2nd and 3rd week). The conclusion drawn from these results was that the growth of osteoid seams is influenced by this Coumarin-derivative, whereas, the mineralisation of mature osteoid is not.
