Notes: Summary In comparison with untreated controls, a significant prolongation of thromboelastographic fibrin formation time under treatment with Nifurantin® was observed in pregnancy. Both in pregnancy and in puerperium Nifurantin® caused a significant increase of plasminogen. In the same way, euglobulin-lysis-time is shortened. In the Nifurantin® treated group, we found no increase of complications in the course of delivery or puerperium. In view of the extension of the half-life of Nitrofurantoin in the newborn infant, the same reaction of coagulation and fibrinolysis has to be assumed. When the mother is treated with Nifurantin®, plasminogen is increased in cord blood and normalization of Kjeldahl-fibrin and -lysis is prolonged.

Notes: Summary The distribution of haptoglobin phenotypes (Hp) 1–1, 2–1 and 2–2 in 174 patients suffering from liver cirrhosis was determined and compared with a reference group consisting of 194 healthy subjects. The study revealed a high frequency of the Hp 1–1 phenotype (32%) in the patients as compared with the control group (14%). This difference is statistically highly significant (p〈0.00025). It was calculated that in individuals of type Hp 1–1, the risk of liver cirrhosis is 4.3-fold higher than in persons with the phenotype Hp 2–2.

Notes: Summary Most of the studies devoted to the mechanism by which certain antibiotics increase the ion permeability ofbiological membranes have been carried out on artificialmodel systems. Undoubtedly one of the major reasons for this was that some of the most relevant biological membrane systems are of submicroscopic dimensions and thus inaccessible to the common electrochemical measuring techniques. This holds for the inner membrane systems of chloroplasts, mitochondria, and retinal rods. Since it is not trivial that a mechanism of action found for a model membrane works as well in a biological one with a much higher structural complexity, it seemed worth-while to study the mechanism of action of ionophorous antibiotics on the above-mentioned biological membranes. In this paper, a nonelectrochemical method for measuring both the voltage and the current across the inner chloroplast membrane (or thylakoid membrane) is established in extension of earlier work. This method is used to characterize the mode of action of valinomycin on the thylakoid membrane.

Notes: Abstract Chromatophores of Rhodobacter sphaeroides were excited with light flashes to generate a transmembrane electrical potential difference. The electric relaxation was measured by electrochromic absorption changes as a function of added gramicidin. At low gramicidin/bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) molar ratios the decay of the electrochromic absorption changes showed a biphasic behaviour, with a fast phase relaxing at some μs, and a slow phase relaxing at more than 100 ms. This was attributable to a mixture of vesicles containing gramicidin dimers with others containing none. The concentration dependence of this effect was linear. This implied full dimerization of gramicidin. The data were interpreted to yield an average bacteriochlorophyll content per chromatophore of 770(±150) and the conductance of a single gramicidin dimer in the chromatophore membrane of 15(±4) pS (in about 115 mM KCl).
