Notes:
The experiment was designed to investigate the root activity of plants growing in deep peat. This was measured by the absorption of radioactive phosphate placed at different depths in the peat, and the method is described. The roots in the grass/clover sward were apparently confined to the surface 6 in. of the peat and no differences were detected between those growing next to the ditch, where the water table was at its lowest, and those in the middle of the plot. These points are discussed in relation to seasonal differences in the height of the water table, depth of cultivation and application of lime and fertilizer.
