Notes: A 46-year-old female underwent an excision of a parathyroid adenoma diagnosed as recurrent primary hyperparathyroidism 24 years after the initial excision of a parathyroid adenoma. We report a case of non-synchronous double adenomas of the parathyroid glands documented histopathologically.

Notes: Abstract Objective: Laparoscopy has become one of the important diagnostic modalities of nonpalpable testis and has been developed and applied in the treatment of this disease. In the present study, we investigated the usefulness of laparoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of nonpalpable testis. Methods: Laparoscopy was carried out under general anesthesia on 21 patients (23 testes) from October 1991 to October 1999. If the internal spermatic vessels and vas deferens made their way into the internal inguinal ring, the inguinal canal was dissected with an incision in the inguinal region to look for the testis. Patients with intra-abdominal testis underwent laparoscopic orchiopexy or orchiectomy. If the internal spermatic vessels terminated with a blind end intraperitoneally, making it impossible to identify the testis, the case was judged to be vanishing testis and the operation was finalized without any further examination. Results: In eight of 23 testes (35%), the internal spermatic vessels and vas deferens made their way into the internal inguinal ring. The inguinal region was examined in all the eight testes. Orchiopexy was carried out on two testes and orchiectomy was carried out on six testes. An intra-abdominal testis was detected in eight of 23 testes (35%). Laparoscopic orchiopexy was carried out on seven testes. One-stage orchiopexy was carried out on two of the seven testes and two-stage Fowler-Stephens orchiopexy was carried out on five of the seven testes. Orchiectomy was carried out on the remaining testis. Blocking or lack of the internal spermatic vessels and vas deferens was seen in seven of the 23 testes (30%) and this condition was diagnosed as vanishing testis. Conclusion: Laparoscopy for nonpalpable testis is considered to be the most effective technique for diagnosing the presence or absence of the testis and the location of the testis.

Notes: PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT) thin films with various preferred crystallographic orientations were synthesized on various substrates using pulsed laser deposition techniques. Larger piezoelectric displacement, which involved the bending vibration of the PZT film/substrate, was observed in randomly oriented PZT thin film than that in (100)- and (111)-preferred texture films. This result was discussed by correlation with the number of effective spontaneous polarization axes in the morphotropic phase boundary of the PZT system. Moreover, polarization fatigue was found to lower the electric-field-induced displacement significantly, indicating a large contribution of ferroelectric domain motion to the piezoelectric response of PZT thin films under bipolar drive.

Notes: Two types of Si-Ti-C-O fibers STC(6HS) and STC(6H), with different C/Si molar ratios of 0.99 and 1.65, respectively, have been subjected to oxidation tests at high temperatures between 1000° and 1500°C. Both fibers showed different mass gain during the oxidation tests. In the unoxidized region, there was no change in the chemical composition. For STC(6HS), coarse ß-SiC grains were formed throughout the region, while the grain coarsening in STC(6H) was restricted to the vicinity of the film/fiber interface. In this paper, the influence of free carbon on the oxidation-induced microstructural change of Si-Ti-C-O fibers is discussed.

Notes: Si-C-O bulk ceramics with various atomic ratios were produced by pyrolysis and high-temperature treatment (HTT) of a polycarbosilane (PCS) precursor with a given amount of oxygen. The oxygen introduction within the PCS molecular structure makes the compact infusible during the pyrolysis step, and supports sintering. The derived chemical compositions are mapped on a Si-C-O constitution diagram, with their transition behaviors due to HTT described. Upon heating between 1500° and 1700°C, the chemical compositions of the as-pyrolyzed specimens were as follows: PCS-6 (SiC1.36O0.26), PCS-8 (SiC1.25O0.45), and PCS-10 (SiC1.02O0.68), moving toward C/Si = 1.2, 1.0, and 0.8 with a reduction of the oxygen content, respectively. It is also shown that there are influences of the initial oxygen content on the resulting microstructure of both as-pyrolyzed and heat-treated specimens.
