Notizen: The packing stage starts at the end of mold filling. During this stage, additional material is forced into the mold to compensate for the shrinkage during subse-quent cooling. Underpacking results in molded parts with dimensional variation. Overpacking causes flash at the parting lines, stick during ejection, and excess residual stresses resulting in warpage. The packing stage is thus extremely important in the determination of the final quality of the product. Despite its importance, analysis of the packing stage has been relatively ignored, particularly the viscoelastic effect. In this work, the analysis of the isothermal packing stage is presented for a Maxwell fluid. A set of governing equations is derived for a two-dimensional mold and solved using the Galerkin finite element method. In addition to the distribution of velocity and pressure, the model predicts the stresses in the planar direction, which could be used for subsequent calculation of the residual stresses.

Notizen: A new device has been designed for the measurement of the die swell of extruded polymer melts. According to the proposed procedure, samples can be collected, annealed, and photographed. The device may be used in conjunction with any capillarytype rheometer. It can accommodate simultaneously as many samples as it is needed. The samples are suspended in a thermostated liquid, carefully selected for each polymer. The liquids must be thermally stable and of proper density and thermodynamic and interfacial properties. The device was used in conjunction with the Instron capillary rheometer, ICR. Three types of polymer were tested: polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), and a semirigid poly(vinyl chloride) formulation (PVC). The swelling of the extrudates was followed for ca. 40 min; the equilibrium dimensions were usually reached within the first 2 min. Parallel with these measurements, the samples were tested in the Weissenberg rheogoniometer (WR) recording both shear and normal stresses. For PS and PE, the flow curves determined in these two rheometers overlapped, while they differed for PVC. The swell ratio, Bexp = D/D0 (where D and D0 are the equilibrium diameter of the extrudate and diameter of the capillary, respectively), was converted to recoverable shear strain, s, as follows. First, Bexp and s were determined in ICR and WR, respectively, for a PS sample over wide and overlapping ranges of rate of shear. This experimental dependence was found to follow Tanner's theoretical relation. Consequently, this relation was used to compute s from Bexp for all the other samples. Excellent agreement was observed between the s values calculated from Bexp and s values determined in WR.

Notizen: For injection flow of thermoplastic material in thin cavities, with some minor restrictions, both pressure and stream function obey Laplace equations. An analytical-numerical method, with a generalized viscous model used, is developed for determining the shape of a progressing flow front and for computing flow quantities and temperature distributions. Specifically, flows in a rectangular cavity are solved and compared to experiments.

Notizen: The present work proposes a new approach for the calculation of the diffusion coefficients in binary liquid systems. The proposed equation is based on the results obtained by statistical mechanics of transport phenomena in dense media. It does not include viscosity explicitly, and the variables required for the calculation are fundamental in nature; these are the free volume of a molecule obtainable from physical measurements such as velocity of sound and the heat of vaporization of the solute. In spite of its theoretical background, the proposed correlation obtains results on fifty-six different solute-solvent systems with about 13% deviation from the experimental results. The effect of concentration on the diffusion coefficient is very easy to determine and is more in accord with experimental results than can be predicted by other available correlations.

Notizen: A new apparatus has been constructed to measure the thermal conductivity and the thermal diffusivity of reactive and nonreactive liquids and solids. The method used consists in suddenly subjecting the test specimen to a thermal flux and measuring the velocity of the heat wave across the sample. Maintaining the heat flux leads to a steady thermal gradient across the sample from which the thermal conductivity can be determined. The test duration is short relative to durations employed by existing conventional techniques and thus causes only a small thermal disturbance to the sample of the order of 1 to 2°C. Thermal properties of liquids and solids, including thermoplastics and a typical epoxy resin during cure with different equivalents of an aromatic diamine hardener have been measured near room temperature. Experimental data compare favorably with literature values for similar systems. Variations in thermal conductivity and diffusivity during cure have been obtained through a series of individual discrete measurements to cover the whole isothermal cure history. The results have been analyzed and discussed with respect to the cure characteristics of the resin and the nature of the physicochemical changes the material undergoes during cure.

Notizen: A commercial blow-molding grade, high-density polyethylene resin was employed to produce cylindrical bottles in a commercial reciprocating screw-extrusion blow-molding machine. The distributions of thickness, crystallinity, birefringence, and impact strength were obtained at various positions. The thickness is greatest near the parting lines, while minimum thickness occurs at the top and bottom of the bottle. The thickness tends to be uniform in the middle section, in agreement with earlier studies of the parison during processing. Density and crystallinity distributions are closely associated with the distribution of thickness and its effect on the cooling rates prevailing during molding. Frozen stresses and birefringence are largest at the outer surface, where cooling rates are highest. The impact strength is lowest near the parting line. Photomicrographs suggest that this is associated with internal flow and crystallization phenomena.

Notizen: Artificial weathering devices are used extensively by the plastics industry to aid in the prediction of the weatherability of plastic matrials. Correlations between the results of outdoor and artificial weathering, however, are poor for lack of control and understanding of the exposure variables in these devices. This work summarizs some of the results of an experimental program designed to analyze the effects of variables in artificial weathering on the preoperies of selected commercial plastics. In addition to the presentation of data establishing the importance of each of the variables in artificial weathering, a discussion of the significance of these data with regard to the selection of optimum exposure cycles is given. Furthermore, some new approaches are proposed with regard to obtaining inproved correlations between the results of outdoor and artificial exposure. Model calculations based on the proposed approaches yield a surprisingly high degree of correlation between the two types of exposure.

Notizen: Some commonly used empirical equations of state for polymers are considered: the Spencer-Gilmore equation with two and three adjustable parameters, the Whitaker-Griskey equation, and the Rehage-Breuer equation. Also, a new equation is proposed: the Inverse Volume equation. These equations are evaluated with regard to fitting experimental P-V-T data and agreement with experimental data on isothermal compressibility and thermal expansion coefficient. The adjustable parameters for each equation are determined with the help of Rosenbrock's optimum-seeking technique. Analysis of the residuals on specific volume for a variety of materials suggests that the Spencer-Gilmore equation with three adjustable parameters, the Rehage-Breuer and the Inverse Volume equations yield the smallest and most random residuals and thus the least systematic error. The same three equations mentioned above yield results in good agreement with experimental isothermal compressibility data. However, among all the equations considered in this study, the Inverse Volume equation yields the best agreement with experimental thermal expansion coefficient data. Furthermore, it is the only equation to correctly predict the rise in thermal expansion coefficient with increasing temperature.

Notizen: The injection molding of thermosetting compounds involves complex interactions between material parameters and molding conditions, on one hand, and moldability and the ultimate properties of molded parts, on the other hand. The main role of the molding variables may be related to their effects on the cure time and temperature and on the flow and thermal phenomena that affect orientation and residual stresses. These effects are manifested in the ultimate mechanical properties and shrinkage of the molded articles. Only scattered empirical data are available on the effects of material parameters, like the basic kinetic, thermal, rheological, and pressure-volume-temperature properties of thermosetting compounds. The lack of useful information in this area may be related to the unavailability of sufficient, satisfactory data on the above properties. This situation has also resulted in limitations on meaningful work towards the mathematical modelling of the molding process, which would be useful for the optimization of production rates and product quality. The paper summarizes the status of work in this area with emphasis on recent results relating to kinetic, thermal, and rheological characterization of thermosetting molding compounds.
