Notes: The emission from KCl@B:Sb3+ and KI@B:Sb3+ excited in the A-absorption band was measured as a function of exciting photon energy and temperature. The A-band excitation produced two emission bands for KCl@B:Sb3+ and a single band for KI@B:Sb3+. The definitive assignment of these bands is presented in terms of the adiabatic potential energy surface (APES), in which the effect of the spin–orbit interaction (SO) on the Jahn–Teller (JT) interaction coupling to the Eg mode is taken into account. The polarization spectrum and the angular dependence of polarization ratio of the A-band emission were also studied to determine the symmetry axes of the Sb3+ –vacancies complex. The results indicate that the anisotropy is associated with the relaxed excited state (RES) of Sb3+. It is also found that the JT interaction coupling to the T2g mode and the vacancies, situated in the next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) and the nearest-neighbor (nn) positions to the Sb3+ ion, give rise to an additive perturbation.

Notes: In situ high-Tc superconducting thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−x were deposited on (100) SrTiO3 substrate by laser ablation with a glancing angle geometry at different substrate temperatures in the 560–700 °C range. The transition temperatures, x-ray diffraction patterns, and surface morphologies of the films were substantially different from one another. The critical temperatures of the films deposited at below 600 °C were 72–84 K, while the films deposited at above 650 °C showed Tc0 of 85–91 K. The x-ray diffraction patterns and surface morphologies of the films showed that the orientations of the deposited films depended on the substrate temperature. The films deposited at 700 °C showed an exclusive orientation of "c'' axis perpendicular to the (100) SrTiO3 substrate surface, but those deposited at below 600 °C exhibited random but a preferential orientation of c axis parallel to the (100) SrTiO3 surface. The dependence of the film orientations versus substrate temperature is explained in terms of lattice misfits as well as the surface mobility of the adatoms or molecules at the deposition temperature. Also, the deposition rates were found to be a function of the substrate temperature, and the activation energy of surface migration of adatoms was measured to be 0.21±0.03 eV.

Notes: Abstract The new burden surgical technology must assume demands not only improved efficiency and reduced risk, but also diminished cost and resource utilization. To this end, we have instituted the use of multiple, sequential technologies in complex, minimally invasive procedures: laparoscopic gastric surgery (44 cases), spine procedures (38 cases), and colectomies (96 cases). The technologies include head-mounted display, 3-D optics, robotic arm, harmonic scalpel, and optical access trocars. The combined use of these technologies shortened operative times, diminished use of personnel, and as associated with no technical mishap. Surgeon concentration and control of the operative environment were increased. In an effort to promote combined use of technologies, a structured teaching process was designed and implemented. It required five (average) experiences for efficient, hands-on implementation of combined technologies. We conclude that combined use of sophisticated technologies is safe and efficient; is accomplished by structured, moderately intense educational experience; and diminishes cost and use of human resources.
