Notes: Abstract The concept of the “relativity of simultaneity”, as a consequence of the Lorentz transformations, is shown to be an unproven inference based on the implicit idea that simultaneity can be determined only on the basis of synchroneity. The Lorentz transformations do imply, by interpretive inference, a relativity of synchroneity whereby a “moving” system of synchronized clocks appears to be nonsynchronous, with constant nonzero time invariant phases among the clocks that depend only on their relative fixed distances from each other. It does not seem to have been recognized that such an array of uniformly running nonsynchronous clocks, described as isochronous, can also lead to the unambiguous determination of simultaneity. The important significance of the relative temporal phases, namely the relativity of synchroneity, entailed by the Lorentz transformations is that certain alleged logical inconsistencies, asserted by both proponents and opponents of the special theory of relativity, can be readily resolved. The relativity of synchroneity does, however, raise certain other consequences that merit attention and careful consideration.

Notes: Abstract The circular arc swept out by the angular displacement of a clock indicator (or its equivalent representation) measuring time is shown to be a Lorentz invariant, representing “universal” time. The concepts of time dilation and transverse Doppler effect are accordingly not physically observable. The experiments on these effects when examined critically are found to be inconclusive. Length contraction, also experimentally unconfirmed, and kinematic temporal phase, both consequences of the Lorentz transformations, are as a matter of logical consistency also physically unobservable.

Notes: Abstract In a multidetector experiment on 26 or 30 AMeV32S+58Ni, up to four coincident heavier or intermediate-mass fragments were observed. One of these occasionally has the characteristics of a projectile-like fragment, up to three may be attributed to the decay of the heavy reaction product. Taking the velocity of the fragments as a measure of the heavy-product excitation energy, one finds evaporation, fission and multifragmentation to follow one another with rising excitation. Model simulations of sequential decay with up to two binary fissions and, alternatively, of simultaneous statistical multifragmentation were performed for comparison with experimental distributions of mass, velocity and (for events with three slow intermediate-mass fragments) relative azimuthal angle. Though in the three-fragment events indications of simultaneous multifragmentation are present, the sequential binary decay predominates. Evaporated protons and α particles detected in coincidence have a mean multiplicity growing with excitation energy, while the temperature governing the spectra has a plateau with a value of about 5.5 MeV.
